Remote Free Medical Coding Training information

What is remote free medical coding training?

Remote free medical coding training is an online educational program that teaches individuals how to accurately assign codes to medical diagnoses and procedures for billing and record-keeping purposes. These programs are offered at no cost and allow learners to study from home using digital materials, video lectures, and virtual practice exercises. The training typically covers medical terminology, coding systems like ICD-10 and CPT, healthcare regulations, and insurance processes. Upon completion, participants may be better prepared to pursue entry-level medical coding positions or certification exams. Remote free training options are ideal for those seeking a flexible, affordable path into the healthcare industry.

What can I expect from the team structure and support during remote free medical coding training programs?

During remote free medical coding training, you’ll typically be part of a virtual cohort with access to instructors, teaching assistants, and peer discussion forums. While the learning is self-paced, most programs provide regular live Q&A sessions, mentorship, and prompt feedback on assignments. Collaboration tools like discussion boards or chat groups are often available to help you connect with fellow participants and instructors. Although you won’t be in a physical classroom, you’ll still have structured guidance and opportunities for networking, which can be invaluable as you progress toward certification and employment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a medical coder, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Medical Coder, you need a solid understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and coding systems like ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS, often supported by a certificate or associate degree in medical coding. Proficiency with electronic health records (EHR) software and coding/billing platforms is typically required, along with credentials such as CPC, CCS, or CCA. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and strong organizational skills are important soft skills that distinguish top performers. These skills and qualifications ensure accurate coding, reduce billing errors, and support compliance with healthcare regulations.

Your daily mission

Our coding training specialists are responsible for ensuring the quality, accuracy, and continuous development of the coding and auditing staff. This role's primary function is to support the department's operational goals by leading new hire onboarding, providing ongoing training and quality assurance, and serving as a subject matter expert on coding guidelines and client requirements. The specialist handles complex coding questions, resolves disputes, manages client appeals, and develops educational materials. This role directly impacts departmental production, accuracy, and the professional growth of the coding team.

Who you are

  • High school diploma or equivalent; associate's or bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of production coding in a risk adjustment environment.
  • Minimum 1-2 years of auditing other coders' work.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience with Complete Code Capture.
  • Required experience in Medicare Advantage, commercial, and Medicaid risk adjustment.
  • Current core coding credential (e.g., CPC, CRC, CCS, CCS-P). Apprentice status (CCA or CPC-A) is not sufficient. CRC is preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge of ICD-10-CM, coding guidelines, and risk adjustment models.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe, and coding platforms.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Superior time management and organizational skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication for providing feedback.
  • Exposure to different EMR systems (Epic, Athena).
  • Previous work with an encoder preferred.
  • Previous NLP (Natural Language Processing) experience preferred.

The reality of the role

New hire onboarding and foundational training

  • Lead end-to-end onboarding processes for new coders and auditors, including initial setup of all required software, systems, and access.
  • Conduct intensive, one-on-one virtual training sessions to cover department processes, coding platforms (e.g., Advance), client-specific guidelines, and Centauri policies.
  • Direct the work of new hires during their initial training period by assigning practice charts and performing 100% QA on their work to provide detailed, actionable feedback.
  • Track and document new hire progress through daily summaries and communication with managers to ensure a smooth transition to production.

Ongoing coder/auditor support and quality assurance

  • Serve as the primary resource for the Risk Adjustment Coding Services (RACS) team by researching and answering complex coding questions and resolving rebuttals between coders and the QA team.
  • Provide validation support for existing staff moving to new or unfamiliar projects, ensuring they meet accuracy standards before full production.
  • Lead one-on-one remediation and Validation Improvement Plans (VIP) for coders who fall below accuracy expectations, including targeted feedback sessions and supplemental training.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve IT and system-related issues within coding portals to ensure minimal disruption to production staff.

Educational material and departmental training

  • Develop, update, and maintain a centralized library of training materials, including presentations, project-specific guidance documents, and general coding resources.
  • Identify trending issues and knowledge gaps by analyzing RACS questions and QA feedback and proactively develop training to address them.
  • Prepare and lead live, bi-weekly project meetings to provide clarifications, present updates, and address common errors.
  • Stay current with official coding updates (e.g., ICD-10-CM, AHA Coding Clinic) and disseminate critical information to the coding department.

Client and project-specific responsibilities

  • Manage and execute time-sensitive client appeals by reviewing coded charts, correcting errors, and providing detailed rationale to defend coding decisions.
  • Collaborate with the Coding Education Manager on strategic initiatives to improve department-wide accuracy and production.
  • Attend client calls as needed to provide subject matter expertise on coding and training processes.
  • Participate in new hire interviews and provide collaborative feedback on candidates.
  • Other duties as assigned by leadership.
