Remote Forest Biometrics information

What are Remote Forest Biometrics?

Remote Forest Biometrics refers to the use of remote sensing technologies and data analysis to measure and monitor forest characteristics, such as tree height, biomass, and carbon storage, without the need for extensive fieldwork. Professionals in this field use tools like LiDAR, satellite imagery, and drones to collect and interpret data from forests. This approach is increasingly important for large-scale forest management, conservation, and climate change studies, as it allows for efficient and accurate assessment of forest resources over wide areas. Remote forest biometrics specialists often collaborate with ecologists, foresters, and GIS analysts to support sustainable forest management and policy decisions.

What is the difference between Remote Forest Biometrics vs Forest Data Analyst?

AspectRemote Forest BiometricsForest Data Analyst
Required CredentialsDegree in forestry, ecology, or related field; GIS and statistical skillsDegree in environmental science, forestry, or data analysis; GIS and statistical skills
Work EnvironmentRemote, field data collection, GIS softwareOffice-based, data analysis, reporting
Industry UsageForestry, conservation, research projectsForestry, environmental consulting, research

Remote Forest Biometrics focuses on analyzing forest data remotely using GIS and statistical tools, often involving field data collection. Forest Data Analysts primarily interpret and analyze forest data in office settings. Both roles require similar credentials and serve overlapping industries, but their work environments and daily tasks differ.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in remote forest biometrics roles?

Professionals in remote forest biometrics often face challenges such as limited access to field sites, reliance on remote sensing technologies, and the need for strong data management skills. Working remotely can require collaboration with teams across different time zones, making communication and project coordination crucial. Additionally, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of biometric data collected from afar demands familiarity with advanced software and sometimes troubleshooting technical issues independently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Forest Biometrics Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Forest Biometrics Specialist, you need a solid background in forestry, statistics, and data analysis, typically supported by a degree in forestry, natural resources, or a related field. Proficiency with GIS software, remote sensing technologies, and statistical analysis tools like R or Python is generally required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and excellent communication skills help professionals interpret complex data and collaborate effectively with teams. These skills ensure accurate forest inventory assessments and support sustainable forest management decisions.

Job description

Job Title: MRV Analyst II
Location: Remote
Terms: Full Time
Reports To: Sr. Technical Manager MRV
About us:
The American Forest Foundation (AFF) unlocks the power of family forests as a climate solution while helping thousands of landowners care for their land and improve forest health. Through its Family Forest Carbon Program, AFF expands access to the voluntary carbon market for family forest owners from all walks of life while producing high quality forest carbon credits to help companies reach their net zero goals. The organization's strategic direction seeks to enable family forests to capture and store one billion tonnes of carbon by 2050.
We do not do this alone. AFF works across a broad coalition of conservation partners, corporations, and policymakers to equip family forest owners with financial and technical support to implement sustainable forest management practices on their lands and activate their forests as a critical tool in the fight against climate change.
AFF is in a mode of complex problem solving and rapid iteration. All teams at AFF are working to discover solutions to the planet's most pressing climate issues through developing and iterating viable and scalable models for impact. AFF is driven by values of our shared purpose, measurable and verifiable results, and learning for continuous improvement to tackle big conservation challenges.
About the Role:
The MRV Analyst II is a technical role supporting the implementation of FFCP's forest carbon accounting and monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) systems. This position contributes to forest carbon quantification, modeling, and statistical analyses that support carbon credit issuance and verification activities.
The MRV Analyst II performs detailed technical analyses and documentation in collaboration with senior technical staff and cross functional teams. The MRV Analyst II supports interactions with validation and verification bodies (VVBs), standards, and technical consultants as needed.
Requirements
Responsibilities:
  • Develop, maintain, and implement FFCP carbon accounting analyses, including baselines, additionality, leakage, uncertainty, permanence risk, and credit outputs.
  • Review and contribute to FFCP monitoring reports, technical documents, and supporting calculations used in verification cycles.
  • Produce clear, auditable documentation of analytical methods and decisions suitable for external verification.
  • Provide support for third-party validation and verification, including responding to auditor questions related to carbon accounting, statistics, and uncertainty.
  • Support continuous improvement of FFCP MRV systems to improve scalability, efficiency, and audit readiness.
  • Coordinate with data and systems staff to ensure MRV datasets supporting carbon accounting are aligned with analytical and verification needs.
  • Manage technical consultants, where relevant to project level carbon accounting.

Candidate requirements:
  • Degree in forestry, forest biometrics, ecology, environmental science, statistics, or a closely related field.
  • 3-5 years of professional experience in forest carbon, MRV, forest inventory, or applied environmental modeling.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting carbon accounting under standards and interacting with third-party verifiers.
  • Strong knowledge of forest carbon pools, GHG accounting principles, and statistical analysis.
  • Strong analytical skills using quantitative tools (e.g., R, Python, SQL).
  • Strong technical writing and documentation skills suitable for audit and verification contexts.
  • Familiarity with biomass estimation and growth & yield modeling
