Remote Flight Operations Controller information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Flight Operations Controller, and why are they important?

To excel as a Remote Flight Operations Controller, you need strong situational awareness, decision-making skills, and a background in aviation operations, often supported by relevant certifications or training such as an FAA Remote Pilot Certificate. Familiarity with flight planning software, real-time tracking systems, and communication tools is typically required. Exceptional communication, attention to detail, and the ability to stay calm under pressure are vital soft skills in this role. These competencies are crucial for ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant flight operations in remote or unmanned contexts.

How does a Remote Flight Operations Controller typically interact with pilots and ground crews during daily operations?

As a Remote Flight Operations Controller, you play a critical role in coordinating flight schedules, monitoring flight paths, and ensuring compliance with safety protocols. Interaction with pilots and ground crews is primarily conducted via digital communication tools, such as radio, chat systems, and specialized software. You are responsible for relaying real-time updates, addressing any operational concerns, and facilitating smooth handovers between teams. Effective communication and situational awareness are essential, as you'll often collaborate with multiple stakeholders to prevent delays and maintain flight safety standards.

Both roles require aviation certifications and involve remote communication with flight crews, but their specific responsibilities differ in flight monitoring versus planning.

What are Remote Flight Operations Controllers?

Remote Flight Operations Controllers are professionals responsible for monitoring, managing, and coordinating aircraft operations from a remote location, rather than from an on-site control tower or operations center. They use advanced communication systems and software to track flights, communicate with pilots, and ensure compliance with safety regulations. Their duties often involve responding to emergencies, updating flight plans, and facilitating efficient air traffic movement, all while working remotely. This role is critical for supporting unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) as well as traditional aircraft, especially in situations where on-site management is not feasible.

Location: 100% Remote (occasional travel may be required)
Contract Length: 6 months (with possibility of extension)
Pay Rate: $120โ€“$130/hour
Contract Type: 1099

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Finance Business Process Owner to support a SAP Finance implementation by leading upfront business process design and translating those processes into clear, actionable system requirements. This role will sit at the intersection of Finance, Operations, and IT, ensuring that core financial processes are well-defined, aligned to business needs, and effectively mapped to SAP capabilities.

The engagement will begin with deep process discovery and design, followed by facilitation of workshops and documentation of requirements to support configuration and implementation of SAP Finance modules. This role is ideal for someone who understands both financial business operations and how SAP Finance (FICO / S/4HANA) supports and constrains those processes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead end-to-end finance business process design to support an upcoming SAP Finance implementation.
  • Facilitate structured workshops with Finance and business stakeholders to define current-state and future-state financial processes.
  • Document core finance processes including, but not limited to, record-to-report, procure-to-pay, order-to-cash, and financial close.
  • Translate business process definitions into clear functional requirements for SAP Finance modules.
  • Act as the bridge between business stakeholders and the SAP implementation team, ensuring requirements are understood, feasible, and aligned with SAP capabilities.
  • Advise stakeholders on what SAP Finance can and cannot do, helping guide process decisions and design trade-offs.
  • Support requirements validation, prioritization, and refinement as implementation planning progresses.
  • Ensure process designs support scalability, controls, compliance, and reporting needs.
  • Provide ongoing input and clarification during the implementation lifecycle as questions arise.

Required Qualifications

  • Strong background in finance business processes, with hands-on experience in accounting, controllership, FP&A, or finance operations.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting or leading SAP Finance implementations from a business or functional perspective.
  • Working knowledge of SAP FICO and/or SAP S/4HANA Finance, including how financial processes map to SAP functionality.
  • Proven ability to lead workshops, facilitate discussions, and align cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Experience translating business processes into detailed functional requirements.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to engage both business and technical audiences.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment while driving outcomes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Direct experience as a Business Process Owner, Functional Lead, or Finance SME on SAP implementations.
  • Experience working in complex, enterprise-scale finance environments.
  • Familiarity with change management considerations tied to finance system transformations.
  • Experience supporting process standardization across multiple business units or geographies.

Engagement Notes

  • This role is process-first, with SAP requirements derived from well-defined business workflows.
  • The consultant will not be responsible for technical configuration, but will play a critical role in shaping implementation success.
  • Occasional travel may be required for key workshops or stakeholder sessions.
