What is a remote flexible data scientist?

A Remote Flexible Data Scientist is a professional who analyzes and interprets complex data to help organizations make informed decisions, all while working remotely with flexible hours. This role combines expertise in statistics, programming, and domain knowledge to extract insights from data sets. The 'remote flexible' aspect means that the data scientist can perform their duties from anywhere and often has the freedom to set their own work schedule, as long as project deadlines and goals are met. This arrangement is especially appealing to those seeking work-life balance and autonomy while leveraging their analytical skills.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a remote flexible data scientist?

To thrive as a Remote Flexible Data Scientist, you need strong analytical skills, a solid background in statistics and mathematics, and a degree in a related field such as computer science or data science. Proficiency in programming languages like Python or R, experience with data analysis tools (e.g., SQL, Tableau), and familiarity with machine learning frameworks are typically required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, self-motivation, and clear communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating across remote teams and managing projects independently. These competencies are essential to deliver actionable insights and drive data-driven decisions while adapting to flexible work environments.

How does working remotely as a flexible data scientist impact collaboration with cross-functional teams?

As a remote flexible Data Scientist, you will often collaborate with engineers, product managers, and business analysts across time zones and platforms. Effective communication is key, as much of the teamwork happens via video calls, shared documents, and project management tools. While you have the benefit of flexible hours, you’ll need to be proactive in syncing up with teammates, attending virtual stand-ups, and providing timely updates. Many companies also encourage regular virtual check-ins and use collaborative platforms like Slack or Microsoft Teams to keep everyone connected and aligned.

Job description

Data Scientist
Remote | U.S. Citizenship Required | Security Clearance Eligibility Required | Part Time

Why This Role Exists
The work we do has real impact, and the people behind it matter just as much.

D amp;G is seeking Data Scientist to develop statistically defensible representations of logistics-network behavior for modeling, simulation, and decision support. This role characterizes variability and uncertainty, fits probability distributions for key network variables, develops statistical or predictive models where they add value, and evaluates simulation outputs. Working with Operations Research Analysts and technical SMEs, the Data Scientist converts observed data into defensible assumptions and clearly communicates confidence, uncertainty, and limitations. The role focuses on statistical analysis rather than data pipelines, database architecture, or simulation software infrastructure.

What You Will Do

  • Perform exploratory data analysis to characterize distributions, variability, correlations, outliers, missingness, seasonality, and other patterns in logistics and operational data.
  • Fit and validate probability distributions for key network variables and quantify uncertainty using statistical methods, sensitivity analysis, resampling, and Monte Carlo techniques.
  • Develop and evaluate statistical and predictive models, including classification, clustering, and anomaly detection, to improve understanding of logistics-system behavior and support mission decisions.
  • Assess data sufficiency, model assumptions, performance, and uncertainty to distinguish meaningful signals from noise and identify additional data needs.
  • Partner with Operations Research Analysts to translate empirical findings and probability distributions into defensible stochastic inputs, parameters, and assumptions for modeling and simulation.
  • Analyze simulation outputs for variability, confidence, convergence, sensitivity, and statistical significance, collaborating with Data Engineers, Database Architects, and Logistics SMEs to validate analytical fitness.
  • Translate results into decision-ready visualizations and findings, and document methods, assumptions, code, diagnostics, limitations, and data provenance to support reproducibility and government delivery.

What We Are Looking For

Required

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Operations Research, Computer Science, Engineering, Economics, or a related quantitative field.
  • 8+ years of experience applying statistics, probability, data science, or predictive analytics to complex operational or mission problems.
  • Strong foundation in probability distributions, statistical inference, hypothesis testing, regression, uncertainty quantification, and model validation.
  • Proficiency in Python and SQL, including practical use of common scientific and statistical analysis libraries.
  • Demonstrated experience performing exploratory analysis, fitting distributions, evaluating statistical models, Monte Carlo techniques, and communicating analytical findings to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience working with modeling and simulation, operations research, logistics analytics, or other stochastic analytical environments.

Preferred

  • Master's degree or Ph.D. in Statistics, Data Science, Operations Research, Applied Mathematics, Engineering, or a related quantitative field.
  • Experience with Bayesian analysis, survival/reliability analysis, time-series analysis, or other techniques relevant to logistics-network uncertainty.
  • Experience supporting Federal Government or Department of War modeling, simulation, analytics, or decision-support programs using logistics, transportation, aviation, cargo, UAS, operational-energy, or other mission-performance data.

Location

  • Remote
  • 10% Travel to client site in Washington, D.C. as needed.

Clearance and Eligibility

  • Must be a U.S. citizen and able to attain a security clearance.

  • This role is restricted to U.S. person(s) (U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and other protected individuals under 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)).

Who We Are
At D amp;G Solutions, people come first; our teammates, customers, and the communities we serve.
We are one of the fastest growing companies in the Washington, DC area and proud to be recognized nationally as a Best Place to Work. As an 8(a), Service-Disabled Veteran Owned, and Women Owned Small Business, we bring ownership, accountability, and care to everything we do. We also deeply believe in giving back and proudly support organizations such as Homes for Our Troops, SemperK9, and Wreaths Across America.
Our teams are welcoming, collaborative, and deeply committed to mission success. We believe great work happens when people feel supported, respected, and trusted, and we work hard to create that environment every day.

What We Offer
Competitive salary | Benefits | 401(k) | Bonus and profit sharing | Flexible hours | Education reimbursement | PTO

Final Note
If you want to work for a company that cares about its people, contribute to a mission that truly matters, and be part of a team where you are valued for who you are as well as what you do, we would love to hear from you.
