As of Jul 3, 2026, the average yearly pay for remote flexible data scientist in the United States is $122,738.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $98,500.00 and $136,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Is 40 too late for data science?

Age is not a barrier to becoming a data scientist, and many professionals transition into the field later in life. Success depends on acquiring relevant skills such as programming, statistics, and machine learning, often through online courses or certifications, regardless of age.

What is the 80 20 rule in data science?

The 80/20 rule in data science suggests that roughly 80% of results come from 20% of the efforts or features. Data scientists often use this principle to focus on the most impactful variables, optimize models, and prioritize tasks for efficiency in analysis and model development.

How does working remotely as a flexible Data Scientist impact collaboration with cross-functional teams?

As a remote flexible Data Scientist, you will often collaborate with engineers, product managers, and business analysts across time zones and platforms. Effective communication is key, as much of the teamwork happens via video calls, shared documents, and project management tools. While you have the benefit of flexible hours, you’ll need to be proactive in syncing up with teammates, attending virtual stand-ups, and providing timely updates. Many companies also encourage regular virtual check-ins and use collaborative platforms like Slack or Microsoft Teams to keep everyone connected and aligned.

Can a data scientist work fully remote?

Yes, many data scientist roles are fully remote, especially in companies that prioritize flexible work arrangements. Remote data scientists typically use tools like cloud platforms, collaboration software, and programming languages such as Python or R to perform their tasks from anywhere. However, some positions may require occasional on-site meetings or specific certifications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Flexible Data Scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Flexible Data Scientist, you need strong analytical skills, a solid background in statistics and mathematics, and a degree in a related field such as computer science or data science. Proficiency in programming languages like Python or R, experience with data analysis tools (e.g., SQL, Tableau), and familiarity with machine learning frameworks are typically required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, self-motivation, and clear communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating across remote teams and managing projects independently. These competencies are essential to deliver actionable insights and drive data-driven decisions while adapting to flexible work environments.

What is a Remote Flexible Data Scientist?

A Remote Flexible Data Scientist is a professional who analyzes and interprets complex data to help organizations make informed decisions, all while working remotely with flexible hours. This role combines expertise in statistics, programming, and domain knowledge to extract insights from data sets. The 'remote flexible' aspect means that the data scientist can perform their duties from anywhere and often has the freedom to set their own work schedule, as long as project deadlines and goals are met. This arrangement is especially appealing to those seeking work-life balance and autonomy while leveraging their analytical skills.

How can I make $100,000 a year working from home?

A remote flexible data scientist can earn $100,000 annually by gaining advanced skills in machine learning, data analysis, and programming languages like Python or R, along with experience in cloud platforms and data visualization tools. Building a strong portfolio, obtaining relevant certifications, and working for companies that offer remote roles with competitive salaries can help achieve this income level.

Job description

The Role

We are looking to grow our core Applied Science team by adding a "Senior Applied Data Scientist". This is an individual contributor role on a highly collaborative team. The Applied Science team is a self-sufficient, product development team that applies research and experimentation to fulfill its goals of developing and maintaining business-critical software systems. In short, you'll be a full-stack applied data scientist and software developer. 3Play Media has diverse business and technical challenges related to media transcription, captioning, audio description, dubbing, subtitling, and translation. This team makes major contributions in many technical domains, including software engineering, systems engineering, machine learning, natural language processing, generative AI, signal processing, applied probability and statistics, data analysis, and controlled experimentation. You'll be expected to contribute to and learn about several of these domains.

We are looking for a curious, communicative, collaborative, humble, self-sufficient, and flexible data scientist. The ideal candidate is energized by the craft of building efficient, reliable software systems alongside sensible, robust machine learning and AI models. You'll approach engineering and data science as disciplines that are always evolving, and you actively seek out and weigh new approaches rather than settling into the familiar. Above all, you understand that this work is a team sport: you know that strong collaboration, durable relationships, and genuinely diverse perspectives aren't nice-to-haves but the foundation of doing it well.

What You'll Do
  • Contribute to a shared codebase, using GitHub and other modern collaboration tools, such as agentic coding systems
  • Perform the technical elements of a variety of product development and data analysis projects (prototyping, evaluation, productionization, and maintenance), especially related to audio and video processing, generative AI, predictive modeling, and NLP
  • Participate in the internal peer review process, including design reviews, code reviews, and data analysis reviews
  • Design, manage, and analyze controlled experiments within our production systems
  • Regularly report on progress, results, findings, risks, and opportunities
Who You AreMust-haves
  • 2+ years full time working experience in signal processing, data science, or machine learning roles, including predictive modeling, data processing, and data analysis responsibilities
  • Extremely strong communication skills, both verbally and in writing
  • Strong familiarity with Python coding, utilizing industry standard libraries (e.g., Pandas, NumPy, Scikit-learn, Matplotlib/Seaborn)
  • Interest in presenting technical and business-oriented information to a variety of audiences, including senior management and customers
  • BS/ MS / PhD in Data Science, Engineering, Computer Science or a related field
Nice-to-haves
  • Strong academic and professional experience with audio signal processing, speech synthesis, and computer vision
  • Experience writing, deploying, and maintaining Python and SQL code in a production setting
  • Experience building and maintaining production machine learning systems in a cloud-based platform, such as AWS SageMaker
  • Experience developing and maintaining custom deep learning models using pytorch and HuggingFace, especially models involving text, audio, and video data
  • Experience using third-party generative AI systems, including prompt engineering and fine-tuning
  • Experience in the accessibility and localization industries
⚡ AI at 3Play

3Play is building AI into how we work across every function. We don't expect expertise — we expect curiosity. If you've used AI tools to work smarter, automated something that used to be manual, or found a better way to do your job with technology, that mindset belongs here.

Compensation & Location

Base salary range: $150k - $180k

Location: Remote — United States

Employment type: Full-time
