What Does a Remote Financial Controller Do?

As a remote financial controller, you work from home to help manage the accounting and funding needs of your employer. Your duties include helping to forecast budget needs, prepare a statement on current funds and expected returns from ongoing projects, and prepare reports to submit to any relevant entities, such as executives within the company or government agencies that require paperwork before awarding contracts. You often work through email, video conferencing, and similar virtual communication channels to gather information for these reports. Companies also advertise this job under titles like corporate controller, so be sure to read each job description carefully.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Financial Controller, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Financial Controller, you need strong expertise in accounting principles, financial analysis, and reporting, typically backed by a degree in finance or accounting and relevant certifications like CPA or CMA. Proficiency with enterprise resource planning (ERP) software such as SAP or QuickBooks, advanced Excel skills, and experience with cloud-based financial tools are essential. Exceptional attention to detail, organizational skills, and effective remote communication set top candidates apart. These competencies ensure accurate financial oversight, regulatory compliance, and the ability to lead finance teams successfully from a distance.

How does a Remote Financial Controller effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams while working offsite?

As a Remote Financial Controller, collaboration with departments such as operations, HR, and executive leadership is typically managed through regular virtual meetings, shared financial dashboards, and cloud-based reporting tools. Clear communication and proactive scheduling are key to ensuring alignment on budgeting, forecasting, and compliance matters. Many organizations adopt project management software and secure document-sharing platforms to facilitate seamless teamwork and maintain data integrity. Building strong relationships remotely may require additional effort, but consistent updates and responsiveness help bridge the distance and foster trust.

Job description

Controller

Remote [within the US]

ABOUT THE ROLE:

HiddenLayer is hiring a Controller to own accounting end-to-end as the finance function scales. You'll report to the CFO and build the close, controls, and systems a growing business runs on. If you've wanted to take a company through external audit, modernize the finance stack, and own accounting in a SaaS business at this stage - this is that role.

WHO WE ARE:

HiddenLayer protects the world's most valuable technologies from adversarial AI attacks. We were founded by AI professionals and security specialists with first-hand experience of how insidious adversarial AI attacks can be to detect and defend against. Determined to prove that these attacks were preventable, the team developed a unique, patent-pending, productized solution to support organizations in accelerating their adoption of AI securely.ย

Our dedication to innovation has been recognized by prestigious awards such as RSA's Innovation Sandbox Winner, CB Insights AI 100, CyberTech 100, and SC's Most Promising Early-Stage Start-up.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

  • Monthly close. You'll own close end-to-end - journal entries through published financials - with a target cadence of 10 business days monthly.
  • Audit readiness and external audit. You'll stand up documentation and controls for external audit, partner with the CFO on firm selection, and manage fieldwork through to a clean opinion.
  • The books. Full GL, AP, AR, treasury, payroll accounting, and revenue recognition. You'll have CFO partnership on technical accounting matters and external support available for heavier lifts (ASC 718, 340-40, SAFE conversion) as needed.
  • Finance systems. You'll own the finance systems roadmap - GL, AP, expense, and billing tooling - and lead evaluations and migrations as the business scales. We want someone who has opinions here.
  • Revenue recognition policy. SaaS subscription, some services, occasional non-standard deals, a reseller arrangement. You'll own the policy, review non-standard contracts before they close, and partner with RevOps on ARR tie-out.

WHO YOU ARE:

  • 7+ years in accounting, with time as Controller or Assistant Controller at a Series A/B (or later) SaaS company
  • CPA
  • Personally owned monthly close in a SaaS business, with a track record of hitting a 10-business-day cadence
  • Been through external audit as the day-to-day internal lead
  • Executed at least one GL migration
  • Owned revenue recognition under ASC 606 in a SaaS environment, including non-standard deals
  • Fluent in SaaS financial metrics and reporting (ARR, deferred revenue, bookings-to-billings, gross margin by revenue type)
  • Worked effectively in a mostly-remote finance org
BONUS:
  • Big 4 or national firm early-career background
  • Experience with modern SaaS-native GLs (Rillet, Campfire, Sage Intacct, NetSuite)
  • Experience with Maxio, Chargebee, Stripe Billing, or similar
  • Prior exposure to federal customers (not GovCon - we do not have DCAA exposure)
  • Experience in cybersecurity, AI infrastructure, or adjacent

  • Comprehensive Health & Wellness Benefits: Better than your average startup healthcare benefits. With five options to choose from, of which are fully subsidized by HiddenLayer, we offer a variety of options to fit each person's needs. We also offer vision, dental, and 401k offerings.
  • Flexible Time Off: Enjoy unlimited and flexible time off for all salaried employees, in addition to 15 paid company holidays.
