Remote Federal Contractor information

What is a remote federal contractor?

A Remote Federal Contractor is an individual or company that provides goods or services to the U.S. federal government while working from a location outside of a traditional government office, often from home or another remote setting. These contractors are not government employees but are hired through contracts to fulfill specific roles, such as IT support, project management, or consulting. Working remotely allows for flexibility and can broaden access to federal contracting opportunities. However, remote federal contractors must still comply with strict security, reporting, and performance requirements set by the government.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a remote federal contractor?

To thrive as a Remote Federal Contractor, you typically need expertise in your technical field, a solid understanding of federal regulations, and often a relevant degree or security clearance. Familiarity with government procurement systems, project management tools, and secure communication platforms is commonly required. Strong self-motivation, time management, and clear written communication help you excel in a remote, compliance-driven environment. These skills ensure you can meet contract requirements efficiently while maintaining security and regulatory standards.

What are common challenges of working as a remote federal contractor, and how can they be addressed?

Remote federal contractors often face challenges such as navigating security requirements, maintaining clear communication with government teams, and adapting to evolving project scopes. To address these, it’s important to stay updated on federal compliance standards, utilize secure communication tools, and proactively schedule regular check-ins with stakeholders. Building strong relationships with both your contracting agency and federal clients helps ensure expectations are met and fosters a collaborative remote work environment.

The Contracts Administrator will also help improve Magpie's contracts administration processes as the company continues to grow.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

This position reports directly to the CEO. It is structured around two major responsibilities: 85% Contracts Administration and 15% Process Improvement & Capability Development.

  • Coordinate the preparation, review, negotiation, execution, and administration of Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs), Teaming Agreements, Prime Contracts, Subcontracts, Task Orders, Statements of Work (SOWs), Contract Modifications, and related contractual documents.
  • Perform initial contract reviews, prepare routine redlines, identify non-standard terms, and coordinate agreements requiring executive or legal review.

  • Track contract obligations, deliverables, option periods, modifications, notices, renewals, and other key contractual milestones and deadlines.
  • Prepare routine contractual correspondence with customers, prime contractors, subcontractors, vendors, and business partners.
  • Coordinate with project managers and leadership to ensure contractual obligations are understood and fulfilled.
  • Coordinate with outside legal counsel on agreements requiring legal interpretation or other specialized legal review.

Process Improvement & Capability Development (15%)

  • Continuously improve Magpie's Contracts Administration function by developing scalable processes, tools, and best practices.
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures, templates, checklists, playbooks, and workflow documentation supporting the contract lifecycle.

  • 5+ years of experience administering federal government contracts for a government contractor.
  • Demonstrated experience administering FAR-based prime contracts, subcontracts, contract modifications, and business agreements, including NDAs and Teaming Agreements.
  • Working knowledge of the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) and standard federal government contracting practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple concurrent agreements, prioritize competing deadlines, and recognize issues requiring executive or legal escalation.
  • Experience working remotely and collaborating effectively across distributed teams.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience supporting CMS, HHS, or other Federal Civilian agencies.
  • Experience supporting small or growing government consulting firms.
  • Certified Federal Contracts Manager (CFCM), Certified Professional Contracts Manager (CPCM), or similar professional certification.
