Job description

At VAS, a URUS Group company, we develop mobile, cloud, and connected software solutions that support dairy producers in managing herd performance and day-to-day operations.
We're seeking a Software Engineering Manager who combines strong technical expertise with people leadership and stakeholder management. You'll lead and develop an engineering team, contribute to architecture and technical strategy, drive delivery, and partner across Product, Design, Business, and Engineering.
This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who can move quickly, improve quality, and stay close to the technology while helping shape what comes next.
A Day in the Life
As a Software Engineering Manager, you'll stay close to the technology while leading your team, driving delivery, and partnering across the business. You'll:
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing software engineering team while fostering a collaborative, innovative, and accountable culture.
  • Drive Agile delivery, including sprint planning, retrospectives, standups, prioritization, and removal of blockers.
  • Set clear goals, manage team capacity, and maintain momentum across changing priorities and complex initiatives.
  • Contribute to architecture decisions, technical strategy, code reviews, debugging, and critical technical problem-solving.
  • Establish and reinforce engineering best practices, quality standards, testing practices, and sustainable development processes.
  • Balance delivery speed with software quality, technical debt reduction, and long-term platform health.
  • Evaluate and introduce new technologies, tools, and approaches that improve engineering effectiveness and business impact.
  • Partner closely with Product, Design, Business, and Engineering stakeholders to align technical priorities with business objectives.
  • Communicate progress, risks, tradeoffs, and technical recommendations clearly to senior leaders and other stakeholders.
  • Recruit, onboard, and retain strong engineering talent while creating an environment that supports learning, experimentation, candid feedback, and continuous improvement.

What You Bring
  • 8+ years of software development experience with a strong technical foundation.
  • 4+ years of experience leading or managing software engineering teams.
  • Meaningful experience with mobile application development, including React Native, iOS, Android, or similar technologies.
  • Experience with offline-first architecture and applications designed to operate in environments with limited or intermittent connectivity.
  • Experience working with modern application technologies such as JavaScript, TypeScript, React, .NET, Node.js, APIs, or microservices.
  • Strong understanding of software architecture, system design, design patterns, and modern application development.
  • Experience with AWS and modern cloud-based software environments.
  • Experience with CI/CD, automated testing, DevOps practices, and modern software delivery processes.
  • Experience leading software delivery using Agile or Scrum methodologies.
  • Proven ability to work effectively across Product, Design, Engineering, business teams, and senior stakeholders.
  • Strong communication, critical thinking, problem-solving, and organizational skills, with a track record of leading complex software initiatives through delivery.

Nice to Have
  • Experience with IoT, Bluetooth/BLE, connected devices, or hardware-integrated applications.
  • Exposure to AI/ML, data engineering, emerging technologies, or AI-enabled software development tools.
  • Experience introducing new technologies, frameworks, methodologies, or engineering practices.
  • Experience with experimentation approaches such as A/B testing, feature flags, rapid prototyping, or proof-of-concepts.
  • Experience working in fast-paced, high-growth, or rapidly evolving technology environments.
