Job description

Senior Substation Physical Engineer – Remote

Client is seeking a Senior Substation Physical Engineer to provide technical leadership, engineering support, and design oversight for utility substation projects across the United States. This remote position requires strong substation physical design experience, leadership capabilities, and a proven background supporting electric utility or consulting engineering environments.

The Senior Substation Physical Engineer will lead and support the development of substation engineering deliverables for transmission and distribution projects ranging from equipment upgrades to large-scale substations with voltages up to 500 kV. This role will provide technical direction, mentor engineering teams, support clients, and ensure high-quality project execution.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical leadership and oversight for substation engineering and consulting projects.
  • Develop and review physical substation design deliverables including equipment layouts, plans, sections, grounding, lightning protection, control building arrangements, cable routing, AC/DC power systems, and bills of material.
  • Serve as project lead, technical reviewer, or independent reviewer for assigned projects.
  • Lead and mentor engineers and designers while supporting team development and project success.
  • Prepare and review engineering calculations, studies, reports, specifications, and design documents.
  • Coordinate design activities across engineering disciplines and project teams.
  • Support project planning, execution, scheduling, and client communication.
  • Perform quality reviews of engineering drawings and deliverables.
  • Conduct site visits, field walkdowns, constructability reviews, and construction support activities as needed.
  • Assist with proposals, scope development, business development, and client relationship initiatives.
  • Improve engineering processes, tools, and technology within the organization.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 7+ years of substation engineering experience for Senior Engineer I level.
  • 10+ years of related experience for Senior Engineer II level.
  • 15+ years of related experience with Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred for Senior Engineer III level.
  • Professional Engineer registration strongly preferred.
  • Experience designing and reviewing substation physical design drawings.
  • Strong knowledge of NESC, NEC, IEEE, NEMA, ANSI, and utility industry standards.
  • Experience with electric utility substation projects up to 500 kV.
  • Ability to lead teams, manage priorities, and deliver high-quality engineering solutions.
  • Strong communication skills with experience supporting clients and cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to work effectively with remote engineering teams.

Preferred Experience:

  • Utility transmission and distribution substation design.
  • Relay/protection & control experience.
  • 3D modeling and substation design software experience.
  • Construction support and field engineering experience.
  • Experience mentoring engineers and supporting technical development.
