What is a remote engineer?

A Remote Engineer is a professional who designs, develops, tests, and maintains software, systems, or infrastructure while working outside of a traditional office environment, typically from home or another remote location. Remote Engineers use digital tools and communication platforms to collaborate with their teams and manage projects. This role requires strong technical skills, self-motivation, and the ability to work independently. Many technology companies offer remote engineering positions to access a broader talent pool and provide greater flexibility for employees.

How to get a remote job as an engineer?

The primary qualifications for getting a remote job as an engineer are a bachelor's degree in a relevant field and several years of experience in a programming role. Many software engineers spend time in other roles to gain experience before applying for this job, which is a relatively senior programming role. Companies often have specific requests or requirements for software engineers, such as experience with particular types of programming, so diversifying your skills and working with a variety of different systems can help you stand out from other engineers. Fulfilling the responsibilities and duties of a remote software engineer requires communication skills and reliable access to high-speed internet.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Engineer, you need strong technical expertise in software development, problem-solving abilities, and a relevant degree in computer science or engineering. Familiarity with version control systems (like Git), cloud platforms, and remote collaboration tools such as Slack and Jira is typically required. Excellent communication, self-motivation, and time management are crucial soft skills for remote success. These competencies ensure productivity, effective teamwork, and the ability to deliver high-quality solutions from any location.

How does a remote engineer typically collaborate with team members across different time zones?

Remote Engineers often work with colleagues who are spread across various locations and time zones, which requires strong communication and coordination skills. Collaboration is usually facilitated through tools like Slack, Zoom, or Microsoft Teams, with scheduled meetings arranged to accommodate as many team members as possible. It's common to use shared project management platforms and clear documentation to keep everyone aligned. Flexibility and proactive communication are key to ensuring seamless teamwork and project progress, even when direct overlap in working hours is limited.

Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Sr. Shopify Engineer based in Netherlands.

Join a remote engineering team delivering innovative digital commerce experiences for global brands and emerging ventures. In this senior role, you'll take ownership of building sophisticated Shopify solutions, from custom themes to purpose-built applications. You'll translate polished UI/UX designs into high-quality, pixel-perfect storefront experiences while ensuring strong performance, scalability, and accessibility. The role combines hands-on engineering with technical ownership across integrations, architecture, and platform optimization. You'll collaborate closely with designers, strategists, and fellow engineers to deliver complete solutions from concept through launch. This is an opportunity to work on challenging projects across diverse industries while staying at the forefront of Shopify's rapidly evolving ecosystem.

Accountabilities
  • Lead the development of custom Shopify themes from the ground up, translating UI/UX designs into responsive, pixel-perfect storefront experiences.
  • Architect, develop, and maintain custom Shopify applications tailored to specific client and business requirements.
  • Optimize Shopify storefronts for speed, performance, SEO, responsiveness, and scalability while following modern engineering best practices.
  • Design and implement integrations between Shopify environments and third-party APIs, services, and platforms.
  • Contribute to scalable technical architecture and make informed engineering decisions across Shopify projects.
  • Work collaboratively with designers, strategists, product stakeholders, and other engineers to deliver end-to-end digital commerce solutions.
  • Participate in modern development workflows, including version control, code reviews, CI/CD, testing, and deployment practices.
  • Stay current with Shopify APIs, development tools, platform capabilities, and ecosystem updates, applying relevant innovations to projects.
Requirements:
  • 5+ years of professional experience in front-end or full-stack development, with significant hands-on experience building Shopify solutions.
  • Strong expertise in Shopify Liquid, HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript (ES6+), and modern front-end development practices.
  • Proven experience creating custom Shopify themes from scratch rather than primarily modifying existing templates.
  • Deep experience developing private and public Shopify apps using Node.js, React, or comparable technologies.
  • Strong understanding of REST and GraphQL APIs, including experience integrating third-party services into Shopify environments.
  • Solid knowledge of storefront performance optimization, responsive design, SEO best practices, and scalable Shopify architecture.
  • Experience with Git-based development workflows, CI/CD pipelines, and modern software engineering practices.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex technical challenges and independently drive projects toward high-quality outcomes.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams in a fast-paced environment.
  • Curiosity and willingness to continuously learn as the Shopify ecosystem, APIs, and development standards evolve.
Benefits:
  • Competitive salary.
  • 100% remote working.
  • Flexible work location.
  • Unlimited paid time off, within reasonable guidelines.
  • Local public holidays.
  • Opportunities for professional growth and career development.
  • Support for professional and personal development.
  • Company-branded swag package.
  • Opportunity to work on innovative digital products and projects for established brands and emerging ventures.
  • Collaborative, multidisciplinary remote working environment
