What is a remote electrical engineer?

A remote electrical engineer is a professional who designs, develops, tests, and supervises electrical systems and equipment while working outside of a traditional office or lab environment, often from home or another remote location. They use digital tools to collaborate with teams, create schematics, and solve engineering problems. This role requires strong technical skills, effective communication, and the ability to use remote collaboration software to manage projects and interact with clients or colleagues.

What does a remote electrical engineer do?

The job duties of a remote electrical engineer focus on designing electrical systems for a variety of purposes. As a remote engineer, your responsibilities typically involve using a computer to develop electrical systems for equipment, industrial machines, construction projects, computer systems, or other projects. You assess customer needs and specifications and include these factors in your design. You may interface with a technician who uses your design to build the electrical components. A remote electrical engineer can collect data on electrical operations to assess the efficiency and stability of an existing electrical system and locate potential trouble areas.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote electrical engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Electrical Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering principles, circuit design, and a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Proficiency with CAD software (such as AutoCAD or Altium), simulation tools, and familiarity with industry standards and certifications (like PE licensure) is important. Strong problem-solving abilities, self-motivation, and effective virtual communication skills help you excel when collaborating remotely. These competencies are crucial for delivering high-quality engineering solutions, maintaining project timelines, and ensuring seamless teamwork in a remote environment.

How does a remote electrical engineer effectively collaborate with on-site teams and other remote colleagues?

As a Remote Electrical Engineer, you will regularly collaborate with on-site teams, project managers, and other engineers through digital platforms such as video conferencing, shared design software, and cloud-based project management tools. Clear communication and proactive updates are essential to ensure alignment on project goals, design specifications, and deadlines. While you might not be physically present at job sites, you’ll often participate in virtual walkthroughs, review digital schematics, and provide real-time input during meetings. Building strong relationships with both remote and on-site team members helps ensure that your contributions seamlessly integrate with the broader project workflow.

Job description

Description

We’re looking for an experienced Electrical Engineer with strong power distribution expertise to join our senior engineering team. In this role, you’ll lead the design and development of advanced underground electrical and controls equipment serving the mining and industrial markets.

Reporting to the senior Electrical Engineer, you’ll drive innovation in high‑reliability power distribution systems—including medium‑voltage switchgear, mobile substations, and integrated automation solutions. Your work will ensure our products perform safely and consistently in demanding environments while meeting stringent industry standards.

This position combines hands‑on engineering with project leadership and cross‑functional collaboration. You’ll have opportunities to mentor junior engineers, influence strategic technical direction, and contribute to continuous improvement across the organization.

We offer flexible hours (typically 40–45 per week) and occasional travel for on‑site support or customer consultations.

If you’re a seasoned Electrical Engineer with deep experience in power distribution—and you’re excited about applying modern technologies such as VFDs, intelligent protection relays, and remote monitoring systems—this is a chance to help shape the next generation of underground electrical systems at a growing, forward‑thinking company.

Lead the design and optimization of advanced power distribution systems (480V–35kV) for underground mining and other heavy‑industry applications, ensuring high reliability and efficiency in demanding environments.

Manage engineering projects from initial concept through commissioning, including system architecture, component selection, load and voltage‑drop analysis, short‑circuit studies, power‑factor correction, and integration of PLC/HMI programming and distributed control systems.

Prepare project cost estimates, develop customer quotations, define testing requirements, and oversee schedules for bidding, design, and implementation phases.

Create and execute equipment testing procedures to ensure performance, safety, and compliance with MSHA, NEC, IEEE, UL508A, and other applicable standards. Review and approve red‑line markups and produce technical documentation such as schematics, blueprints, and engineering reports.

Partner with mechanical engineers, technicians, and cross‑functional teams to resolve design challenges, incorporate customer feedback, and support development of products including mine power stations, disconnect boxes, portable substations, and equipment rebuilds.

Mentor junior engineers and technicians, promoting best practices in power distribution, quality assurance, continuous improvement, and troubleshooting of electrical and instrumentation systems.

Provide field support through troubleshooting, customer consultations, site visits, remote diagnostics, and commissioning activities, with occasional travel as needed.

Stay informed on emerging technologies and trends in underground power distribution, including deeper‑mine power strategies and sustainable system integrations.

Required Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (EE) or a related discipline from an ABET‑accredited program.

Experience: Minimum of 7 years of electrical engineering experience with a strong focus on power distribution in industrial or mining environments. Demonstrated success in designing and commissioning power systems, medium‑voltage equipment, or automation solutions in harsh conditions.

Technical Expertise:

Proficiency in medium‑ and low‑voltage power distribution design and electrical system analysis, including load flow, arc‑flash mitigation, and protection coordination.

Strong troubleshooting skills using tools such as multimeters, current injectors, and insulation testers, along with knowledge of MSHA‑compliant ground monitoring.

Ability to interpret complex electrical schematics, one‑line and three‑line diagrams, specifications, and component layout/general arrangement drawings.

Soft Skills: Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal abilities. Proven problem‑solving capability and a history of delivering high‑quality, innovative power solutions on schedule.

Other Requirements: Ability to work flexible hours and travel occasionally; valid driver’s license; capability to lift up to 35 lbs; strong commitment to safety.
