What is remote drafting?

A Remote Drafting job involves creating technical drawings and plans using computer-aided design (CAD) software while working from a remote location. Drafters collaborate with engineers, architects, or designers to produce accurate blueprints, schematics, and models for construction, manufacturing, or other industries. Responsibilities may include reviewing project specifications, making revisions based on feedback, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. This role requires strong attention to detail, proficiency in drafting software, and effective communication skills for remote collaboration.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a remote drafting professional?

As a remote drafter, your typical day involves interpreting design concepts or engineering sketches and creating detailed technical drawings and plans using specialized CAD software. You’ll collaborate with architects, engineers, or project managers via virtual meetings and rely on cloud-based file sharing and project management tools to stay connected. Reviewing drawings for accuracy, responding to revisions, and ensuring compliance with relevant codes and standards are also routine tasks. While workflow may fluctuate with project demands, excellent organization and proactive communication are critical for staying on track and meeting deadlines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in remote drafting?

To excel in Remote Drafting, you should possess strong technical drawing skills, proficiency in CAD software (such as AutoCAD or Revit), and a relevant degree or certification in drafting, architecture, or engineering. Familiarity with industry-standard drafting tools, file-sharing systems, and virtual collaboration platforms is essential. Attention to detail, time management, and effective written communication are key soft skills in this role. These capabilities ensure accuracy, efficiency, and smooth collaboration with teams and clients across different locations.

Can remote drafting work remotely?

Remote drafting is a common practice in many industries, allowing drafters to work from home or other locations using CAD software and collaboration tools. Successful remote drafting jobs typically require strong technical skills, reliable internet, and good communication with team members. Many companies offer flexible or fully remote positions for qualified drafters.

Drafting and LiDAR Technologist

Location: Remote or Calgary, Alberta | Engagement: Contract, project-based | Compensation: Hourly

About the Company

MSI is an employee-owned company specializing in geomatics, land surveying and remote sensing. Established in 2005 and based in Calgary, Alberta, it offers precise deformation monitoring, aerial remote sensing and bathymetry services using advanced technologies such as LiDAR and drone sensors. Serving clients in the energy, infrastructure, and land development fields.

About the Role

MSI is seeking an experienced Drafting and LiDAR Classification technician to support power transmission line projects. The ideal candidate is self-sufficient, detail-oriented, and comfortable working from established LiDAR classification standards and drafting feature code specifications. This role will involve processing project data through both classification and feature extraction/drafting stages, with quality control responsibilities across either workflow.

Responsibilities

  • Process LiDAR point cloud data for power transmission line projects using provided classification requirements.
  • Perform feature extraction and drafting using established drafting feature codes and project specifications.
  • Classify corridor features such as ground, vegetation, structures, conductors, insulators, and related infrastructure as required.
  •  Prepare, edit, and refine drafting deliverables to meet client and project standards.
  • Conduct quality control reviews for LiDAR classification and/or feature extraction outputs.
  • Identify and correct classification, drafting, completeness, and consistency issues prior to delivery.
  • Work independently to manage assigned tasks, maintain production efficiency, and meet project deadlines.
  • Communicate progress, questions, and data issues clearly with the project team.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in LiDAR classification, feature extraction, drafting, or related geospatial production work.
  • Experience working on power transmission line, utility corridor, or similar linear infrastructure projects.
  • Ability to work independently from supplied classification schemes, drafting feature codes, and project instructions.
  • Strong understanding of LiDAR point cloud interpretation and classification workflows.
  • Experience producing or reviewing drafting deliverables from LiDAR-derived data.
  •  High attention to detail and a strong commitment to data quality, accuracy, and consistency.
  • Ability to complete project-based work in a contract environment with clear communication and reliable availability.
  • Located in North America

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with transmission line asset mapping, corridor modeling, vegetation classification, or utility clearance-related datasets.
  • Familiarity with common LiDAR, CAD, GIS, or point cloud production software and standard LAS/LAZ workflows. Specifically, software like Bentley Microstation, Terrasolid, Globalmapper, etc.
  • Experience performing QA/QC on production datasets and documenting corrections or feedback.

Work Arrangement

This is a contract, project-based position with hourly compensation. The role may be performed remotely or from MSI’s offices in Calgary, Alberta, depending on candidate location and project requirements.

Compensation

Based on experience, qualifications, and work arrangement.
