Remote Dod Software Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote DoD Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote DoD Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills, knowledge of secure software development practices, and a relevant degree—often with active security clearance. Familiarity with languages like Java, C++, or Python, experience with DoD-approved development environments, and certifications such as Security+ or CISSP are typically required. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and self-motivation are vital soft skills for remote collaboration and adhering to strict security protocols. These skills ensure the development of secure, reliable software that meets defense standards while maintaining effective teamwork and compliance in a remote setting.

What is a Remote DoD Software Engineer?

A Remote DoD Software Engineer is a professional who develops, tests, and maintains software systems for the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) while working from a remote location. These engineers play a critical role in creating secure and reliable applications that support military and defense operations. They must often meet strict security and technical requirements, including obtaining security clearances and following DoD-specific software development standards. Remote DoD Software Engineers collaborate with multidisciplinary teams using secure communication tools and are responsible for ensuring their work complies with government regulations and cybersecurity protocols.

What are some unique challenges faced by Remote DoD Software Engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote DoD Software Engineers often encounter challenges related to secure access and communication, since much of their work involves handling sensitive or classified information. Navigating stringent cybersecurity protocols, such as working within secure VPNs or using government-approved devices, can be complex and may require additional onboarding. To address these challenges, engineers should proactively communicate with IT and security teams, stay updated on compliance requirements, and leverage secure collaboration tools provided by their organization. Building strong virtual relationships with teammates and participating in regular check-ins also help maintain project momentum and cohesion.

Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Software Engineer based in Netherlands.

Join a mission-driven engineering team building the software infrastructure that powers the future of clean energy. In this role, you'll develop scalable backend systems that connect energy providers with electric vehicles, home energy devices, and other smart technologies at scale. Working closely with product managers, engineers, and customer-facing teams, you'll help deliver reliable solutions that support real-world energy use cases. You'll have the opportunity to solve complex integration challenges, contribute to modern cloud-based systems, and grow your technical expertise in a collaborative, remote-first environment. This is an exciting opportunity for engineers who are passionate about building impactful technology that accelerates the global energy transition.

Accountabilities
  • Design, develop, and maintain backend integrations with third-party platforms supporting electric vehicle charging and home energy systems.
  • Build scalable, production-ready backend features that address customer needs and enhance platform capabilities.
  • Collaborate closely with Product, Support, Commercial, and Engineering teams to translate business requirements into robust technical solutions.
  • Improve and maintain cloud-based backend services using modern development practices and scalable architectures.
  • Investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve technical issues while continuously improving system reliability, performance, and maintainability.
  • Take ownership of assigned projects, learning new systems, APIs, and technologies through experimentation and modern engineering tools.
  • Participate in code reviews, technical discussions, and architectural decisions while promoting engineering excellence and long-term code quality.
Requirements
  • Professional experience developing and maintaining backend services in production environments.
  • Strong understanding of backend engineering principles, including scalability, reliability, performance optimization, and distributed systems.
  • Experience working with APIs, third-party integrations, or interconnected software platforms.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities with a proactive approach to learning unfamiliar technologies and navigating technical ambiguity.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across technical and non-technical teams.
  • Product-focused mindset with a passion for solving real customer problems through high-quality software.
  • Experience with TypeScript, Node.js, AWS, or comparable backend technologies is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools, IoT platforms, energy technology, connected devices, or API-first architectures is considered an advantage.
  • Exposure to operating production systems, including monitoring or on-call responsibilities, is a plus.
Benefits
  • Competitive compensation package, including an attractive employee equity program.
  • Opportunity to contribute to a fast-growing climate technology company with global ambitions.
  • Remote-first work environment across Europe with optional access to office space or coworking facilities.
  • Access to industry-leading AI development tools to enhance productivity and innovation.
  • Three fully funded annual company off-sites in inspiring international locations.
  • Flexible, people-first working culture that promotes autonomy and work-life balance.
  • Home office setup stipend.
  • Collaborative, mission-driven environment focused on professional growth and meaningful impact.
