As FWI's MRMS Hydromet Development Advisor supporting NSSL, you will apply specialized technical expertise to guide the ongoing optimization of the MRMS Hydromet/QPE (quantitative precipitation estimation) codebase in support of the upcoming VCP-Agnostic version of MRMS โ€” gathering facts, analyzing existing code and data, and developing recommendations and strategies for the development team. • Advise on and, where appropriate, modify existing C++ code or contribute new code to support the ongoing optimization of the MRMS Hydromet/QPE processing software suite
  • Provide expert technical guidance to project staff on software design, coding approach, and technical risk for MRMS development activities
  • Provide technical documentation (e.g., schematics, code repositories, test reports) for development activities
  • Prepare quarterly reports of status

Required:

  • BA/BS in a technical or business discipline
  • 4+ years of professional and/or academic experience

Desired:

  • Software programming skills (C++ required, Perl, Python, and Bash preferred)
  • Software development experience (Git)
  • Demonstrated ability to advise technical teams on software architecture, coding strategy, and development risk
  • Communication skills, including technical writing
  • Ability to work as part of a technical team
  • Familiarity with meteorological datasets, including output from weather radar systems (preferred)

Work Setting and Environment:

  • Primary location: Remote
  • Normal work hours are Monday through Friday, 8 hours per day / 40 hours per week, excluding federal holidays; field data-collection activities may require irregular hours during active severe weather events
  • Local and non-local travel may be required, not anticipated to exceed 5% annually; all unplanned travel must be approved in writing by the COR at least 10 calendar days in advance
  • Must complete an online IT security awareness course within one week of starting work
  • Foreign national candidates are subject to export control review and require CO/COR approval prior to consideration
