JOB SUMMARY:

This position is a Lead Tax Law Specialist in the Department of Revenue's Informal Dispute Resolution (IDR) process. This position performs work in one or more of the following areas: (1) performing complex tax law research; (2) conducting taxpayer conferences dealing with complex disputed issues involving tax assessments, refund denials, and billings; (3) analyzing and interpreting taxing statutes, rules and case law dealing with complex federal and state tax issues stemming from protests of tax assessments and refund denials; and (4) resolving taxpayer complaints and disputed tax issues not resolved through normal administrative channels. The Lead Tax Law Specialist will also assist Revenue Program Administrators and management with the following job tasks: review and edit audit, refund, and billings cases produced by his or her colleagues; train, assist, and mentor new and current employees; participate on hiring teams; attend and participate in conferences; perform limited supervisory responsibilities in the absence of the administrators; and, perform other related duties as requested by administrators and management.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:  

  • Currently employed with the Florida Department of Revenue. 
  • Three years of experience evaluating, analyzing, and interpreting statutes, rules, case law, and policies.
  • Three years of experience drafting legal or technical correspondence.
  • Three years of experience and demonstrated proficiency in the interpretation and application of accounting principles, auditing procedures, and/or reviewing audit work papers.
  • Experience using Microsoft Word and Excel.

PREFERENCES:

  • Three years of experience working in Informal Dispute Resolution.
  • One year evaluating, analyzing, and interpreting sales and use tax statutes, rules, case law, and policies.
  • One year of supervisor experience or equivalent experience in tax administration or project management.
  • One year of training or equivalent experience.
  • One year of experience reviewing and editing written tax-related correspondence produced by others.
  • Experience in conducting tax audits.
  • Experience in Audit Case Management (ACM) and ZAMS.
  • Experience giving presentations or conducting meetings with others.
  • Experience in the use of computers and software programs, with emphasis on Microsoft Word, Excel, and office automation techniques.
  • A degree in accounting, business administration, communications, pre-law, legal studies, or a JD.

SPECIAL NOTES:

  • This position is telework eligible.

SALARY: $74,628.36 / annually
