What are some common challenges faced by remote Digital Signal Processing Engineers and how can they be addressed?

Remote Digital Signal Processing (DSP) Engineers often face challenges such as effective real-time collaboration with cross-functional teams, accessing specialized hardware for testing, and managing complex project documentation. To address these, many teams use collaborative platforms for code reviews, version control, and communication, as well as remote access to lab equipment or simulation tools. Proactive communication and clear documentation are essential for staying aligned with team goals and timelines, enabling remote DSP engineers to contribute effectively despite geographical distance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Digital Signal Processing Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Digital Signal Processing (DSP) Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, mathematics, and DSP theory, often supported by a bachelor's or master's degree in a related field. Familiarity with tools such as MATLAB, Python, C/C++, and DSP development environments, as well as experience with relevant certifications, is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, self-motivation, and effective remote communication are standout soft skills for this role. These skills ensure accurate signal analysis, efficient project delivery, and seamless collaboration with distributed engineering teams.

What is a Remote Digital Signal Processing Engineer?

A Remote Digital Signal Processing (DSP) Engineer is a professional who designs, develops, and implements algorithms and systems for processing digital signals such as audio, video, radar, or sensor data, while working from a remote location. They use mathematical and computational techniques to analyze and manipulate signals to achieve desired outcomes, such as noise reduction, data compression, or feature extraction. Remote DSP Engineers typically collaborate with teams using digital tools, contribute to product development, and may work in industries such as telecommunications, audio engineering, medical imaging, or defense. Their role often involves programming, simulation, and testing of algorithms using languages like MATLAB, Python, or C/C++.

About Ceribell
Ceribell is a medical technology company focused on transforming the diagnosis and management of patients with serious neurological conditions. The Ceribell System is a novel, point-of-care electroencephalography ("EEG") platform specifically designed to address the unmet needs of patients in the acute care setting, and is being used in hundreds of community hospitals, large academic facilities and major IDN's across the country. Our entire team is driven by a shared commitment to transforming the landscape of critical care through our rapid seizure detection technology, come join the movement!
Position Overview:
We are seeking a highly technical Director of Systems Engineering to lead the core electrical hardware, systems, and software development of our next-generation products, while providing ongoing systems engineering leadership for our current core products. In this role, you will be the primary technical leader responsible for translating complex user needs into robust system architectures. You will directly manage and scale a multi-disciplinary team encompassing Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, and Software/Embedded Linux. Crucially, you will oversee complete system integration, ensuring seamless interaction across the hardware and software stack, while guiding key external integrations and development partners.
What you'll do:
Engineering Leadership: Manage, mentor, and actively grow the Electrical, Systems, and embedded software engineering teams.
Systems Engineering & Architecture: Own the system-level architecture of core and next-gen products. Drive requirements generation, flow-down, and traceability across hardware and software disciplines. Ensure the system is designed for reliability, scalability, and manufacturability .
Software Oversight: Guide the software development strategy of next-gen products. Oversee both the embedded stack and the OS-SW teams, driving OS-level configurations, kernel optimizations, and managing external contractors for board support packages (BSPs) .
Hardware Execution: Lead the EE team through the full hardware lifecycle, from component selection and schematic capture to PCB layout, board bring-up, and design for manufacturability (DFM)
Cross-Functional Integration: Act as the technical bridge between Mechanical Engineering, Software, Data Science, core FW teams, Clinical, Quality/Regulatory, and Product Management to deliver a cohesive medical device
What We're Looking For:
  • Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field. PhD degree highly preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience in systems, hardware, and embedded development, with at least 3+ years in a management or director-level role.
  • Strong background in Systems Engineering principles, including requirements management and complex system integration.
  • Deep technical expertise in Embedded Linux environments.
  • Solid electrical engineering foundation, with hands-on experience in production level board design.
  • Hands-on experience with time series signal analysis and digital signal processing (DSP). Must be capable of independently analyzing data, with direct experience in EEG data analysis highly preferred.
  • MedTech experience is highly preferred, specifically working with complex devices that integrate mechanical, electrical, software, and AI components.
  • Direct experience with development of WiFi connected / IoT devices and embedded GUIs is a strong plus.
  • Strong project management and organizational abilities.
