What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote DFM Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote DFM (Design for Manufacturability) Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical or electrical engineering, experience with DFM principles, and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with CAD tools (such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks), PLM systems, and manufacturing process simulation software is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective remote communication skills distinguish top performers in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring product designs are optimized for cost-effective and efficient manufacturing while collaborating across distributed teams.

What is the difference between Remote Dfm Engineer vs Remote Mechanical Engineer?

AspectRemote Dfm EngineerRemote Mechanical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering, DFM experienceBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, design and analysis skills
Work EnvironmentDesign-focused, collaboration with manufacturing teamsDesign and analysis, often CAD-based work
Industry UsageManufacturing, product developmentProduct design, engineering consulting
Common Search IntentDFM design, manufacturing collaborationMechanical design, product development

Remote Dfm Engineers primarily focus on designing products for manufacturability, working closely with manufacturing teams. Remote Mechanical Engineers handle broader mechanical design and analysis tasks. While both roles require engineering credentials and CAD skills, DFM Engineers emphasize manufacturing considerations, making their roles distinct yet overlapping in product development.

What are Remote DFM Engineers?

Remote DFM (Design for Manufacturability) Engineers are professionals who work off-site to ensure that product designs can be efficiently and cost-effectively manufactured. They collaborate with design, engineering, and manufacturing teams—often using digital tools—to identify and resolve potential production issues early in the design process. Their goal is to optimize designs for manufacturability, reduce production costs, and improve product quality, all while working remotely. This role is common in industries like electronics, automotive, and consumer products where global teams need to collaborate seamlessly.

What are some common challenges Remote DFM Engineers face when collaborating with cross-functional teams?

Remote DFM (Design for Manufacturability) Engineers often work with geographically dispersed design, manufacturing, and quality teams. Effective communication can be challenging when clarifying design intents and manufacturing constraints across time zones and digital platforms. To overcome these obstacles, remote DFM Engineers typically leverage collaborative tools, detailed documentation, and frequent virtual meetings to ensure alignment. Building strong relationships and proactively addressing misunderstandings are key to successful collaboration and project outcomes.

Job description

About Galtra Solutions
Galtra Solutions develops and delivers integrated power and cooling systems for data centers, including modular prefabricated platforms. Our work spans design, engineering, manufacturing, and field deployment. We partner with OEMs, fabricators, and technology leaders to accelerate delivery of efficient, scalable solutions for hyperscale, colocation, and AI/HPC markets.
The Role
This is a senior-level, hands-on engineering role. You will own mechanical application engineering for Galtra's prefabricated platforms, bridging requirements, design, and vendor execution. You will also collaborate closely with the Supply Chain Director, Operations Director, Sales, and the President to ensure products meet both technical and commercial goals.
What You'll Do
  • Lead development of prefabricated mechanical offerings such as fan coil units, chilled water skids, hydronic systems, and integrated assemblies.
  • Translate customer requirements and drawings into manufacturable, scalable solutions with clear BOMs and options.
  • Independently select and size fans, coils, pumps, valves, and piping, providing calculation packages and design notes.
  • Collaborate with electrical and controls teams on integration of VFDs, MCCs, switchgear, safeties, and BAS/EPMS points lists (BACnet/Modbus).
  • Partner with the Supply Chain Director, Ops Director, Sales, and President to align designs with vendor capacity, cost targets, delivery schedules, and customer needs.
  • Support prototyping, FAT/SAT, and first-article builds; troubleshoot issues and close gaps fast.
  • Produce and maintain datasheets, submittals, IOMs, and application guides under tight revision control.
  • Work with vendors and fabricators on tolerances, weld and piping standards, coatings, vibration, and QA/QC processes.
  • Contribute to IP development by modularizing platforms and applying DFM/VAVE principles.

What You'll Bring
  • BS in Mechanical Engineering required (MS preferred).
  • 7+ years of experience in HVAC, mechanical systems, or industrial product development. Mission-critical/data center background strongly preferred.
  • Deep knowledge of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, HVAC design, and hydronic systems.
  • Familiarity with prefabricated equipment, modular/skid systems, and DFM practices.
  • CAD proficiency (SolidWorks, Revit, AutoCAD, or similar).
  • Working knowledge of electrical distribution, controls, and BAS/BMS systems is highly desirable.
  • Ability to thrive in a remote, fast-moving environment with minimal supervision.
  • Strong communication skills for cross-team and vendor/customer engagement.

Preferred Skills
  • Experience with data center or mission-critical equipment such as CRAHs/CRACs, fan coils, chilled water plants, or CDUs.
  • Exposure to commissioning processes, including FAT, SAT, or other system-level testing.
  • Familiarity with industry standards and codes commonly used in HVAC, electrical, and mechanical system design (for example, ASHRAE guidelines, UL safety standards, or NFPA codes).
  • Comfort working with ERP/CRM/PLM systems (NetSuite, HubSpot, or similar).
  • Hands-on experience with design and analysis tools such as coil selection software, hydronic modeling, or CFD.

Physical Demands
The following physical demands must be met by the employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is:
  • Frequently required to remain in a stationary position.
  • Frequently moving through office, facility and other environments.

Travel/Relocation Requirements
Up to 25%, this may include travel to any or all 50 US states. Travel is defined as physically leaving home on behalf of business activities including but not limited to client sites, meetings with other employees, meetings for business development purposes, running errands on behalf of the business, attending industry conferences, etc.

  • Flex spending accounts (FSA).
  • Dental and vision plans.
  • Comprehensive medical, dental and vision benefits extended to spouse / domestic partner and dependent children up to age 26.
  • 401k with company match and self-directed brokerage account option.
  • PTO including additional paid time off during the last week of the year.
  • Company paid life insurance coverage for employees and their eligible dependents.
