What is remote development?

Remote development refers to the practice of software development where developers work from locations outside of a traditional office environment, often from home or co-working spaces. This setup is enabled by various collaboration tools, cloud services, and version control systems that allow teams to communicate and manage code remotely. Remote development offers flexibility, can improve work-life balance, and allows companies to tap into a global talent pool. However, it also requires strong communication skills and self-discipline to ensure productivity and team cohesion.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Developer, you need strong programming skills, problem-solving abilities, and experience with relevant coding languages, often supported by a computer science degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, collaborative platforms such as GitHub or Jira, and remote communication tools like Slack or Zoom is essential. Excellent self-motivation, time management, and clear written communication help remote developers stand out. These skills ensure productivity, effective teamwork, and reliable project delivery in a distributed work environment.

How do remote development teams typically collaborate and stay aligned on projects?

Remote development teams usually rely on a combination of project management tools, version control systems, and regular virtual meetings to stay connected and aligned. Communication platforms like Slack or Microsoft Teams, along with daily stand-ups and sprint planning sessions, help ensure everyone is updated on progress and blockers. Code repositories such as GitHub or GitLab facilitate collaborative coding, while documentation tools keep information accessible. Effective remote collaboration often requires strong communication skills and self-discipline to manage tasks independently while staying engaged with the team.

Job Level: Senior Level

Home District/Group: Underground District

Department: Business Development & Proposals

Market: Power

Employment Type: Full Time

Position Overview

The HDD Business Development Manager is responsible for growing our trenchless construction business by identifying, qualifying, and pursuing horizontal directional drilling opportunities across energy, power, communications, water, and industrial markets. This role leads the market intelligence, client engagement, opportunity shaping, and win strategy and partners closely with operations, estimating, engineering, and leadership to develop competitive proposals and deliver reliable forecasts. Success requires strong knowledge of HDD means and methods (including large-diameter and long-run installations), exceptional relationship-building skills, and the ability to translate client needs into actionable pursuit plans.

We offer huge career and travel opportunities and the satisfaction of building some of the most impressive projects on earth. There's a reason Kiewit attracts the best: we offer fast-paced excitement and fulfillment you won't find anywhere else.

District Overview

Kiewit has been rated by ENR as the #1 Design/Build contractor in North America and has the experience, technology and equipment to complete even the most complex tunneling projects.  Our Underground Division has been constructing underground facilities (tunneling, deep foundations) since 1949, and has completed more than 100 underground-related projects totaling more than $1B.   Our long standing success is built on our depth of expertise, safety record, access to specialty equipment and the ability to self-perform work.  We are recognized as a leader in the tunneling industry and our services include TBM Rock, TBM soft ground, sequential excavation, drill and blast, shaft excavation, tunnel rehab and numerous trenchless methods.

Location

In this role, our expectation is that you are willing to go where the work is. Our projects are located across North America. This position is based out of our Omaha, NE HQ, with up to 60% travel required.

Position could qualify for more flexible remote work based on the candidates experience.

Responsibilities

Business Development & Client Engagement:

Build and maintain a qualified pipeline of HDD opportunities through proactive outreach, industry networking, and client/account planning.

Develop and execute pursuit strategies (win themes, differentiators, teaming, and pricing approach) for targeted HDD projects.

Serve as the primary client contact during pursuits; lead discovery meetings, pre-bid conversations, and solution workshops.

Partner with estimating and operations to develop accurate budgets, production assumptions, and risk-based pricing for HDD scopes.

Provide HDD technical insight to shape solutions (bore planning concepts, drilling fluid strategy, pullback/logistics, and constructability).

Track market conditions, competitor activity, and client capital programs; communicate actionable intelligence to leadership.

Represent the company at conferences and industry events; support brand presence and strategic partnerships within the trenchless market.

Qualifications

Bachelors degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business, or related field; equivalent experience considered.

10+ years of experience in trenchless construction and/or HDD (operations, estimating, project management, or business development), with demonstrated client-facing responsibility.

Working knowledge of HDD means and methods including bore planning concepts, drilling fluids, reaming, product pipe installation, and risk management for long-run/large-diameter work.

Excellent communication and presentation skills; able to engage with owners, engineers, and internal leadership.

Experience pursuing HDD scopes for power (underground transmission/distribution), renewables interconnects, midstream/pipelines, or communications.

Track record of selling and delivering complex trenchless projects (river crossings, congested corridors, high consequence areas).

Familiarity with geotechnical risk, inadvertent return mitigation, and permitting considerations affecting HDD work.
