Both roles are essential in IT support but differ in scope and technical depth.

What Does a Remote Desktop Support Engineer Do?

As a remote desktop support engineer, your job is to work from home to install, troubleshoot, and configure software for your company’s computers. Remote desktop support engineers may also guide others through installing hardware, but the remote nature of this job limits your ability to install it yourself. Desktop support engineers frequently apply updates and security fixes, teach users how to use new software, respond to emergency problems, and use a variety of techniques and systems to resolve problems. You often use the telephone, email, and live chat software to communicate with other employees, and you may use remote access software to control a distant computer or server directly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Desktop Support Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Desktop Support Engineer, you need expertise in troubleshooting Windows and Mac operating systems, networking fundamentals, and typically an associate degree or relevant certifications like CompTIA A+ or Microsoft Certified: Modern Desktop Administrator Associate. Familiarity with remote access tools (such as TeamViewer or Remote Desktop Protocol), ticketing systems, and security protocols is essential. Excellent communication, patience, and problem-solving abilities help in understanding user issues and delivering effective remote support. These skills and qualities ensure efficient incident resolution, minimize downtime, and maintain a positive user experience in distributed work environments.

What does a Remote Desktop Support Engineer do?

A Remote Desktop Support Engineer provides technical assistance to users by troubleshooting and resolving computer and software issues remotely. They use remote access tools to diagnose problems, install or configure applications, and guide users through solutions. These professionals ensure that systems are running efficiently and help maintain network security. Their work is essential for organizations with distributed teams or employees working from home.

What are some common challenges a Remote Desktop Support Engineer faces when troubleshooting user issues remotely?

Remote Desktop Support Engineers often encounter challenges such as limited visibility into the user's environment, communication barriers, and varying technical proficiency among end-users. Troubleshooting remotely requires clear instructions and patience, as engineers may need to guide users through steps without being physically present. Additionally, maintaining secure connections and managing multiple support requests simultaneously are typical hurdles. Success in this role relies on strong communication skills, adaptability, and familiarity with remote support tools.

You’ll partner closely with project managers, estimators, field/construction leaders, suppliers, and finance to secure the right solution at the right total cost, while protecting schedule, quality, and compliance. This role offers high visibility and meaningful impact: your decisions directly influence project outcomes, supplier performance, and cost competitiveness. This is a full-time, exempt position with flexibility for onsite in De Pere, WI, hybrid, or remote (for a highly qualified candidate).
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Review construction plans, specifications, schedules, and material takeoffs to translate project needs into purchasing requirements
  • Source qualified suppliers for materials, equipment, and construction-related services; solicit and evaluate quotes/proposals to select best-fit options
  • Lead commercial negotiations (pricing, lead time, delivery terms, and conditions) to optimize cost, schedule, and quality outcomes
  • Prepare and issue purchase orders and procurement packages in accordance with company policy and applicable legal requirements
  • Maintain supplier qualification documentation and support supplier onboarding and performance evaluation activities
  • Track material lead times, delivery schedules, and logistics to ensure timely availability aligned with project timelines
  • Collaborate with project managers, estimators, and construction leadership to forecast procurement needs, resolve constraints, and align on priorities
  • Manage changes in scope, substitutions, pricing updates, and delivery adjustments; document and communicate impacts and approvals to stakeholders
  • Maintain accurate, audit-ready procurement records (pricing, correspondence, approvals, and compliance documentation)
  • Monitor market conditions and cost drivers to support budgeting, risk mitigation, and cost reduction strategies
  • Partner cross-functionally to resolve invoice discrepancies, backorders, and quality issues quickly and professionally
  • Use systems such as Deltek Vantagepoint and FMIS to enter, track, and report purchasing activity with strong data integrity
  • Exhibit strong communication, organization, and follow-through skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a project environment
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Business, Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent applicable experience)
  • 5+ years of experience in purchasing/procurement/supply chain supporting construction or industrial projects
  • Prior experience reading and interpreting construction drawings, specifications, and scopes of work
  • Experience negotiating pricing, delivery, and commercial terms with suppliers and subcontractors
  • Demonstrated experience with procurement practices, supplier management, and documentation controls (purchase orders, RFQs, approvals, audit-ready records)
  • Hands-on experience with ERP/procurement systems and strong Excel/Office skills; comfort working with data to support decisions
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated experience supporting large-scale industrial or commercial construction projects and fast-paced field schedules
  • Experience with Deltek Vantagepoint and/or FMIS (or similar purchasing/ERP platforms)
  • Established background building or managing supplier performance routines (scorecards, KPI reviews, corrective actions)
  • Prior experience with logistics coordination, lead-time risk management, and materials planning approaches in project delivery environments
  • Professional certification such as CPSM, CPM, CSCP, or CPPB (or similar)
