What is a remote design engineer?

A Remote Design Engineer is a professional who creates and develops product designs, systems, or structures while working from a location outside of a traditional office, often from home. They use computer-aided design (CAD) software and collaborate with teams via digital communication tools. Remote Design Engineers can work in various fields such as mechanical, electrical, or civil engineering, and are responsible for turning ideas into detailed technical plans. This role requires strong communication skills, technical expertise, and the ability to work independently. By working remotely, they can contribute to projects from virtually anywhere in the world.

What does a remote design engineer do?

Remote design engineers work from home or a remote office, and depending on their specialty, may have a wide range of duties and responsibilities. For instance, as an electrical engineer, you use specialized tools and software to design and plan electrical systems, ranging from computer hardware to wide power grids. As an automotive design engineer, you translate ideas and consumer needs into usable products, or may even work on a team to design an entire vehicle line. As an industrial design engineer, you may assist in the development of consumer products, ranging from everything from kitchen gadgets to smartphones to modern furniture. In all cases, you work with a team of other designers and engineers, each contributing expertise to create a final product.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote design engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Design Engineer, you need strong expertise in engineering principles, CAD software proficiency, and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with tools like AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and collaborative project management platforms is typically required, along with certifications such as Professional Engineer (PE) where applicable. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and self-motivation are essential soft skills for remote collaboration and project delivery. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering accurate designs, meeting deadlines, and ensuring seamless teamwork in a remote environment.

How do remote design engineers effectively collaborate with teams across different time zones?

Remote Design Engineers often work with colleagues, clients, and stakeholders from various locations, making clear communication and effective collaboration essential. They typically use digital tools like project management platforms, video conferencing, and shared design software to synchronize work and provide updates. To overcome time zone differences, teams may schedule regular check-ins during overlapping hours and establish clear documentation practices so everyone stays informed. Being proactive in communication and flexible with meeting times can greatly improve teamwork and project success.

Can remote design engineers work remotely?

Remote design engineers can work remotely if their employer allows it, and they have the necessary skills in CAD software and communication tools. Many companies offer remote positions for design engineers, especially with experience in virtual collaboration and project management. However, some roles may require on-site presence for testing or manufacturing coordination.

Electrical Design Engineer

Armada

Job description

ย
About the role

Armada builds and deploys ruggedized, modular, containerized data centers that bring high-density AI compute to locations where traditional data centers cannot go. We are scaling production across multiple international markets, with deployments ranging from multi-megawatt GPU clusters to large-scale multi-unit campuses at up to 400 kW/rack.ย

Armada needs an Electrical Design Engineer to work directly under the Senior Electrical Design Engineer on the power and integration team. This is a hands-on design role: you will own the electrical design for modular units from single-line through commissioning, review vendor submittals, and directly support manufacturing partners and deployment teams across multiple time zones. You will not be writing specs from an ivory tower - you will be on calls with manufacturers early in the morning, reviewing arc flash studies at noon, and answering field questions from a commissioning crew in the evening.ย

This role is for someone who wants to ship hardware, not produce reports.ย

Location. This role is remote.

What You'll Do (Key Responsibilities)

  • Develop andย maintainย electrical designs for modular containerized data centers: single-line diagrams, load calculations, panel schedules, grounding, cable sizing, and raceway layouts across multiple low-voltage distribution standards (480 V and other international LV systems).ย
  • Run protective device coordination, arc flash, and short-circuit studies in SKM, ETAP, or equivalent. Produce labels and coordination reports that will be used in the field.ย
  • Review and redline vendor submittals for UPS systems, battery systems, cooling distribution units, switchgear, main distribution boards, PDUs, and generator/ATS packages. Hold vendors accountable to the spec; flag discrepancies early.ย
  • Support manufacturing partners: answer RFIs, resolve conflicts on layout and piping/cable routing, andย participateย in factory witness testing.ย
  • Contribute to multi-jurisdictional compliance across a range of international electrical, fire, and mission-critical facility codes, and coordinate with localย Authorities Havingย Jurisdiction.ย
  • Produce clear engineering documentation: Statements of Requirements, design basis memos, block diagrams, and commissioning procedures. If you hate writing, this is notย theย job.ย
  • Work alongside mechanical, controls, structural, and fire protection engineers - and with external consultants. You will be expected to push back when something is wrong, regardless of seniority.ย
  • Support field commissioning and troubleshooting, including occasional international travel to manufacturing partner sites, deployments, and trade events.ย

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineeringย from an accredited program.ย
  • 3-7 years of post-degree experience in electrical design, with at least 2 years in data centers, mission-critical facilities, industrial power, or equivalent complex power distribution.ย
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of the NEC (NFPA 70) and, ideally, one or more IEC-based national codes. Multi-jurisdictional design experience is a strong plus.ย
  • Hands-on experience with protection coordination and arc flash software (SKMย PowerTools, ETAP,ย EasyPower, or similar).ย
  • Proficiencyย with AutoCAD Electrical and/or Revit MEP, plus Bluebeam Revu (or equivalent) for submittal markup.ย
  • Familiarity with UPS systems (double-conversion topology, battery sizing, parallel operation), medium- and low-voltage switchgear, transformers, and generator/ATS integration.ย
  • Ability to read mechanical and structural drawings well enough to catch interdisciplinary conflicts before they hit manufacturing.ย
  • Clear written communication. You will be writing RFI responses, submittal reviews, and technical memos read by vendors and executives.ย

Preferred Experience and Skills

  • PE or EIT licensure is a plus; neither isย required.ย
  • Experience with containerized or modular/prefabricated data center products.ย
  • Knowledge of high-density liquid-cooled GPU systems and their electrical implications - inrush, harmonics, rack-level power distribution, busway.ย
  • Working familiarity with battery chemistries beyond VRLA and lithium-ion, and with UL 9540A or equivalent large-scale battery testing requirements.ย
  • Familiarity with NFPA 70E, NFPA 75/76, NFPA 110, and NFPA 855 as they apply to mission-critical and energy storage installations.ย
  • Experience coordinating with multiple AHJs and international insurance bodies on mission-critical approvals.ย
  • Exposure to BMS/DCIM integration, BACnet/Modbus, and the electrical side ofย controlsย handoffs.ย
  • Experience working with external manufacturing partners and consultants across multiple time zones.

Compensation

For U.S. Based candidates: To ensure fairness and transparency, the starting base salary range for this role for candidates in the U.S. are listed below, varying based on location experience, skills, and qualifications.

We use a geographic pay structure based on cost-of-labor markets.ย
