What is remote data curation?

Remote data curation involves organizing, managing, and maintaining data sets from a remote location, ensuring their accuracy, quality, and usability for various purposes. Data curators work with digital information, often cleaning, annotating, and structuring data to make it more accessible and valuable for organizations or research. This role can include tasks like verifying data integrity, standardizing formats, and documenting metadata, all performed using online tools and collaboration platforms. Remote data curation allows professionals to work from anywhere, supporting projects in fields such as science, business, or technology.

What are some common challenges faced in a remote data curation role, and how can they be addressed?

One common challenge in remote data curation is ensuring consistent data quality and integrity across distributed teams. Without in-person collaboration, communication gaps can arise, making it important to use clear documentation practices and regular virtual check-ins. Additionally, remote curators often need to be proactive in seeking clarification and feedback to avoid misinterpretation of data standards. Leveraging collaborative tools and maintaining open communication channels can significantly help in overcoming these hurdles and maintaining workflow efficiency.

What is the difference between Remote Data Curation vs Remote Data Entry?

AspectRemote Data CurationRemote Data Entry
Primary FocusAnalyzing, organizing, and maintaining data quality and relevanceInputting and updating data into systems
Required SkillsData analysis, critical thinking, attention to detailTyping accuracy, basic computer skills
Work EnvironmentCollaborative, often involves research and validationIndividual, repetitive tasks
Common CertificationsData management, database certificationsNone typically required

Remote Data Curation involves managing and improving data quality through analysis and organization, while Remote Data Entry focuses on inputting data accurately into systems. Both roles require attention to detail, but data curation demands analytical skills and a deeper understanding of data relevance, making it more complex and strategic compared to the straightforward nature of data entry tasks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Data Curator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Data Curator, you need strong analytical abilities, attention to detail, and a background in information science, data management, or a related field. Familiarity with database systems, data cleaning tools (such as OpenRefine), and metadata standards is typically required, along with experience using collaborative platforms. Excellent communication, organizational skills, and the ability to work independently are crucial soft skills in this remote role. These skills ensure the accuracy, accessibility, and integrity of large datasets, supporting effective data-driven decision-making for organizations.

What this position entails
We are seeking a Senior Product Manager to join our Data team and help launch our Data Curation Pipeline team. This team will be responsible for modernizing a series of healthcare data pipelines that transform raw claims, prescription, and electronic health record (EHR) data into standardized, enterprise-ready datasets that power downstream products, analytics, and client solutions.
This is a highly strategic and execution-oriented role for a product leader with deep healthcare data experience and a strong track record of working across engineering, data, operations, and business stakeholders. You will define the vision, roadmap, and priorities for a foundational data product capability that supports scalable product development across the organization.
In this role, you will operate at the intersection of product management, data platform strategy, stakeholder engagement, and delivery execution. You will partner closely with engineering, architecture, analytics, and business teams to define requirements, prioritize work, manage backlogs, and ensure the team is delivering high-value, high-quality data assets. You will also help establish operating processes, quality standards, and product practices for a new and evolving team.
The ideal candidate brings an entrepreneurial mindset, thrives in ambiguity, and is energized by building foundational capabilities from the ground up. Most importantly, this person understands how to translate complex healthcare data workflows into product strategy and execution that drive meaningful business value.
What you will be doing
Product Strategy & Roadmap
  • Define and drive the product vision, strategy, and roadmap for the Data Curation Pipeline team
  • Lead the modernization of healthcare data pipelines that ingest and transform raw claims, prescription, and EHR data into standardized enterprise datasets
  • Identify opportunities to improve data quality, scalability, usability, speed, and downstream product readiness
  • Partner with internal stakeholders to understand business needs and translate them into product priorities and roadmap decisions
  • Balance short-term delivery needs with long-term platform and data product strategy

Product Development & Requirements
  • Own and manage the team backlog, ensuring clear prioritization of high-impact initiatives, technical enablers, defects, and enhancements
  • Translate business, operational, technical, and data requirements into clear user stories, acceptance criteria, business requirements, and process flows
  • Serve as the primary product point of contact for engineering, architecture, and cross-functional stakeholders
  • Resolve requirement conflicts, clarify priorities, and support the team in delivering high-quality outcomes
  • Define acceptance criteria and participate in user acceptance testing and release validation
  • Ensure delivered solutions meet quality, usability, and business value expectations

Cross-Functional Leadership & Execution
  • Work closely with software developers, data engineers, architects, QA, analytics teams, and business stakeholders throughout the product lifecycle
  • Lead Agile product processes including backlog refinement, sprint planning input, prioritization, and stakeholder communication
  • Coordinate across teams to manage dependencies, risks, milestones, and delivery timelines
  • Establish and refine operating models, team processes, and best practices for a new data product function
  • Communicate roadmap progress, tradeoffs, risks, and outcomes clearly to stakeholders and leadership

Stakeholder Engagement
  • Build strong relationships with internal business stakeholders, product teams, and data consumers across the organization
  • Gather and synthesize feedback from users, internal clients, and go-to-market teams to inform future capabilities and priorities
  • Communicate complex technical and data concepts in ways that are accessible to technical, business, and leadership teams
  • Support strategic discussions around data capabilities, product readiness, and market needs
  • Help ensure the curated datasets support internal and external use cases across analytics, product development, and client solutions

What we need
  • 10+ years of progressive product management experience, including significant experience in data products, platform products, or healthcare technology
  • Deep experience working with healthcare data, including claims, prescription data, and/or electronic health records
  • Demonstrated success defining strategy and delivering products in complex, data-intensive environments
  • Strong experience translating ambiguous business and technical needs into clear product requirements and prioritized backlogs
  • Experience working closely with Agile software development and/or data engineering teams
  • Proficiency with Jira or other product and Agile project management tools
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a data-driven approach to decision-making
  • Ability to operate effectively in a fast-moving, evolving environment with a high degree of ownership and autonomy

What you bring to the table
  • Proven ability to lead product strategy and execution for complex data platforms or data transformation workflows
  • Strong understanding of healthcare data structures, normalization, curation, and downstream product use cases
  • Experience modernizing legacy workflows, systems, or pipelines into scalable productized capabilities
  • Ability to break down complex workflows and datasets into actionable requirements for engineering and data teams
  • Strong prioritization and decision-making skills, including balancing stakeholder requests, technical constraints, and business value
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams and influencing without direct authority
  • Experience working in a matrix organization, including managing dependencies across multiple teams, domains, and microservices
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills, with the ability to establish credibility across technical, operational, and executive audiences
  • Strong attention to quality and experience defining acceptance criteria and validating delivered work
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with a constructive, "can-do" approach to solving problems and building new capabilities
  • Self-motivated, organized, and comfortable working independently while helping shape a growing team
  • Adaptable and willing to pitch in wherever needed
