What is remote copy editing?

Remote copy editing involves reviewing and correcting written content for grammar, spelling, punctuation, style, and consistency, all while working from a location outside of a traditional office. Remote copy editors typically collaborate with writers, editors, and publishers through digital platforms to ensure the quality and clarity of text. This role requires strong language skills, attention to detail, and proficiency with editing tools and software. Many remote copy editors work as freelancers or for agencies, serving clients in publishing, marketing, academia, and other industries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote copy editor?

To thrive as a Remote Copy Editor, you need excellent grammar, spelling, and punctuation skills, along with a strong command of language and attention to detail, often supported by a degree in English, journalism, or communications. Familiarity with style guides (such as AP, Chicago, or MLA), content management systems, and editing tools like Microsoft Word or Grammarly is important. Strong time management, self-motivation, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for working independently and collaborating remotely with teams. These skills ensure the delivery of polished, accurate content while meeting deadlines and maintaining quality across various projects.

What are some common challenges faced by remote copy editors, and how can they be managed effectively?

Remote copy editors often encounter challenges such as managing time zones, maintaining clear communication with writers and editors, and staying focused without in-person supervision. To overcome these, it's important to set consistent work hours, utilize digital collaboration tools (like Slack or Trello), and establish regular check-ins with your team. Additionally, creating a dedicated workspace and following a structured daily routine can help maintain productivity and ensure deadlines are consistently met.

Senior Editor, Audience

Forbes

Jersey City, NJ • Remote

Full-time

Job description

Forbes is seeking a Senior Editor, Audience who understands how journalism travels on social platforms and how to make it perform. The role is a vital part of the newsroom's audience team and will lead social strategy across Facebook, X and LinkedIn, as well as emerging platforms, ensuring editorial quality while driving readers back to Forbes. This editor will identify the stories that matter most and make sure they reach the right audience. You'll work closely with editors, reporters and design staff to get stories packaged and posted quickly, and help plan rollouts for tentpole projects, from major list launches (Under 30, Billionaires) to investigations, features, breaking news and contributor content. Strong candidates have sharp news judgment, superior writing skills and enthusiasm for figuring out the best ways to convert interest in our stories on social platforms into actual Forbes readers. They should be constantly testing new approaches to reach readers and adjust quickly when platforms change.

They must have a strong command of all available performance data, make clear decisions and explain why something is working (and why it isn't). This is a role for a news obsessive who can move quickly and think creatively in real time. This is an editorial role focused on distribution-not brand marketing or paid social. Success in this role means consistently getting Forbes journalism in front of the right audience-and learning quickly from how it performs.

Preference will be given to candidates based in the NY/NJ Metro area. We are also open to remote candidates based in one of the states that we actively recruit from (see below).

Responsibilities:

  • Run day-to-day social strategy across Facebook, X, LinkedIn and emerging platforms (Bluesky, Threads, WhatsApp), with a focus on driving high-value audience back to Forbes.
  • Manage two audience team members, editing and guiding them on how to package stories for social; oversee scheduling and operations.
  • Own performance reporting and use it to adjust strategy day to day.
  • Approves all key social copy.
  • Manage the publishing schedule across platforms, ensuring timely promotion of editorial, video and commerce content.
  • Work with editors and design to package major stories, list launches and special projects.
  • Jump into breaking news moments with a hands-on, real-time publishing approach.
  • Spot platform trends early and flag opportunities for coverage and packaging.

The ideal candidate:

  • 5+ years of relevant editorial and social media experience.
  • Experience with news stories is a must.
  • Demonstrated people management experience, including coaching, developing, and leading high-performing teams.
  • Demonstrated success developing social strategies that grow engaged audiences and drive high-value referral traffic.
  • Strong editorial judgment and exceptional copy-editing skills, with experience packaging complex stories for social audiences.
  • Experience across Facebook, LinkedIn & X, with a strong understanding of platform-specific algorithms, evolving features, and best practices for maximizing organic reach and driving community engagement.
  • Experience with social media analytics platforms and tools such as Google Analytics and ability to interpret performance data to inform strategy.
  • Experience with design tools like Adobe Premiere Pro, Photoshop, Canva and Figma is preferred.

The annual base salary range for this role is $125,000 - $150,000

Forbes has estimated the compensation range set forth above in good faith.  The compensation range is what we believe we will offer, and ultimately pay, a successful candidate.  In determining this range, we consider the experience, level of education (if applicable to the role), knowledge, skills, and abilities required to be had by a successful candidate as well as the budget and the company's pay rates, generally. This said, we may have to make changes to our compensation estimates and job descriptions from time to time and we expressly reserve the right to do so.  Should we make any such changes, this advertisement will be revised to reflect such revisions.  We encourage you to occasionally re-visit this advertisement to ensure that you are abreast of any changes.
