What is a Remote Contract Attorney?

A Remote Contract Attorney is a licensed lawyer who works on a contract or temporary basis, providing legal services to clients or law firms from a remote location rather than an in-office setting. Their work often includes legal research, drafting documents, reviewing contracts, and offering legal advice, all conducted online or via digital communication tools. This arrangement allows for flexibility and can be particularly beneficial for law firms seeking specialized expertise without hiring a full-time employee. Remote Contract Attorneys may work for multiple clients simultaneously and are typically paid per project or on an hourly basis.

What Does a Remote Contract Attorney Do?

The job duties of a remote contract attorney involve working on legal responsibilities from home or another remote location. As a remote contract attorney, you work as a lawyer for law firms or an individual lawyer on a contract basis. You may meet with clients or communicate primarily by phone, email, or video conference. The exact responsibilities of this job vary based on your client, but you typically draft or review legal documents, perform research, negotiate agreements, and provide advice to other members of a legal team. Because this is typically a freelance role, you may work on multiple contracts at the same time.

What are some common challenges faced by Remote Contract Attorneys, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Contract Attorneys often face challenges related to communication and collaboration, as working off-site can sometimes lead to misunderstandings or delays in feedback. To overcome these hurdles, it's important to establish clear channels for regular updates, use secure document-sharing platforms, and maintain proactive communication with supervising attorneys and clients. Additionally, managing time across multiple projects and clients requires strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks effectively. Building relationships with team members through video calls and participating in virtual meetings can also help foster a sense of connection and ensure alignment on project goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Contract Attorney, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Contract Attorney, you need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, active bar licensure, and strong expertise in contract law and legal research. Familiarity with legal research databases (like Westlaw or LexisNexis), document management systems, and secure communication tools is important. Excellent written communication, attention to detail, and self-motivation help you excel in a remote, independent environment. These skills ensure the accurate preparation and review of contracts while maintaining compliance and productivity outside of a traditional office.

Job description

Position: Contract Attorney โ€“ Real Estate Transactions

Reports To: Owner & Managing Attorney

Employment Classification: Contract / Independent Contractor, Remote

Do complex real estate issues become simpler when youโ€™re on the file? Do you produce clean work product, spot problems before they become obstacles, and execute with minimal supervision?

We are seeking a Contract Attorney to join our team and provide support on transactional matters, legal research, commercial leasing, residential transactions, and general real estate matters. This is not a role for someone looking for constant supervision or a training environment. We are looking for an attorney who can step in, understand the assignment, execute efficiently, and produce reliable work product.

WHAT WE OFFER

  • Flexible remote contract work structure.
  • A firm that invests in modern technology, AI-assisted workflows, and smart operations.
  • The opportunity to develop an ongoing working relationship as the firm continues to grow.

WORKLOAD & COMPENSATION

  • Estimated workload: approximately 10-20 hours per week initially, with opportunity for growth based on firm needs and candidate availability.
  • Compensation: hourly contract rate commensurate with experience and demonstrated capability.
Compensation:

$80 - $115 hourly

Responsibilities:

WHAT YOUโ€™LL DO

You will support transactional matters by handling substantive legal work, drafting, and matter management responsibilities, including:

Legal Research & Analysis

  • Conduct legal research and prepare concise, practical memoranda regarding real estate and related legal issues.
  • Research and analyze commercial and residential real estate matters, contract interpretation issues, title questions, and transactional risks.

Commercial Leasing

  • Draft, review, revise, and negotiate commercial lease agreements and related lease documents.
  • Prepare amendments, estoppels, assignments, subleases, extensions, and ancillary lease documentation.

Residential Transactions & Matter Support

  • Oversee residential real estate transactions from intake through closing.
  • Review contracts, title commitments, surveys, closing documents, and transaction materials.

Client Matter Management

  • Manage and track assigned matters to ensure deadlines, deliverables, and communications remain organized and current.
  • Coordinate with clients, title companies, lenders, brokers, and opposing counsel as appropriate.

Contract Drafting & Firm Support

  • Draft, review, and revise agreements and related transactional documents.
  • Assist with the development and refinement of templates, forms, systems, and internal processes.

Qualifications:

WHO YOU ARE

The statements below describe the attorney weโ€™re looking for:

  • You draft clean, organized work product that requires minimal revision before client delivery.
  • You are highly detail-oriented and catch issues before they become problems.
  • You can manage multiple assignments simultaneously without missing deadlines or needing repeated follow-up.
  • You are comfortable with legal research and can distinguish between academic analysis and practical guidance.
  • You are technologically competent and comfortable using document management systems, AI-assisted workflows, and modern legal technology tools.
  • You work independently and arrive with solutions, not just questions.

This role is not a fit if you:

  • Require extensive supervision to complete assignments.
  • Are primarily litigation-trained and looking to pivot.
  • Struggle with organization or deadline management.
  • Prefer highly structured environments with multiple levels of review.
  • Are uncomfortable with technology or process-driven workflows.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Active membership with the Florida Bar.
  • Meaningful real estate transactional experience.
  • Strong drafting, writing, analytical, and communication skills.
