What does a remote competition economist do?

A Remote Competition Economist analyzes markets and industries to assess how competition affects pricing, consumer choice, and business behavior, often working from a remote location. They use economic theory, data analysis, and modeling to evaluate mergers, investigate anti-competitive practices, and advise policymakers or legal teams. Their work helps ensure fair competition and compliance with antitrust laws, and they may prepare reports or provide expert testimony. Working remotely, they collaborate with clients and teams using digital tools and communication platforms.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote competition economist?

To thrive as a Remote Competition Economist, you need a strong background in economics, quantitative analysis, and competition law, often supported by an advanced degree such as a master's or PhD in economics or a related field. Familiarity with statistical software (like Stata, R, or Python), econometric modeling, and data analysis tools is typically required. Outstanding written and verbal communication, critical thinking, and the ability to work independently are vital soft skills. These competencies are crucial for delivering rigorous, data-driven insights and clear recommendations in complex, high-stakes antitrust and regulatory matters while collaborating remotely.

How do remote competition economists typically collaborate with legal teams and clients during antitrust investigations?

Remote Competition Economists often work closely with legal professionals and clients to analyze market data, assess competitive dynamics, and provide expert insights during antitrust investigations. Collaboration usually involves regular virtual meetings, sharing complex economic models, and preparing clear, data-driven reports that support legal arguments. Effective communication is essential, as these economists must translate technical findings into actionable advice for non-economists. Building strong relationships remotely with legal teams ensures alignment and efficient handling of sensitive, time-critical matters.
