The Remote Clinical Engineering Manager focuses on overseeing clinical engineering teams and projects remotely, emphasizing management skills and strategic planning. In contrast, the Clinical Engineer is more hands-on, directly maintaining and troubleshooting medical equipment on-site. Both roles require similar certifications and work within healthcare environments, but their primary responsibilities and work settings differ.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as software engineering, petroleum engineering, and aerospace engineering can earn $300,000 or more annually, especially with extensive experience, advanced skills, and leadership roles. High compensation often involves working in high-demand industries, holding managerial or executive positions, or possessing rare technical expertise and certifications.

What is a Remote Clinical Engineering Manager?

A Remote Clinical Engineering Manager is a professional who oversees the maintenance, safety, and performance of medical equipment and technology for healthcare facilities, but manages these responsibilities from a remote location. They lead teams of clinical engineers and technicians, develop equipment management programs, ensure regulatory compliance, and coordinate with healthcare staff to support patient care. This role often involves managing service contracts, budgeting, and implementing new technologies, all while leveraging digital tools for remote supervision and communication.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Clinical Engineering Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Clinical Engineering Manager, you need a strong background in biomedical engineering, healthcare technology management, and leadership, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree and experience in clinical environments. Familiarity with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), medical device integration platforms, and certifications such as CCE (Certified Clinical Engineer) are common requirements. Outstanding communication, problem-solving, and project management skills set top performers apart, especially when leading distributed teams. These competencies are crucial for ensuring the safety, compliance, and efficiency of medical equipment across remote healthcare facilities.

How does a Remote Clinical Engineering Manager effectively oversee and support on-site biomedical teams from a distance?

As a Remote Clinical Engineering Manager, you will leverage digital tools to monitor workflow, manage preventive maintenance schedules, and provide technical support to on-site biomedical teams. Regular virtual meetings and cloud-based reporting systems help maintain open communication and ensure team alignment. Building strong relationships with hospital staff and technicians is essential, as you’ll often resolve issues and coordinate projects remotely. Successful managers in this role develop clear protocols for escalation, foster a culture of accountability, and stay proactive about compliance and safety standards across multiple locations.

How much does a clinical engineering manager make?

A clinical engineering manager typically earns between $90,000 and $130,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and the size of the healthcare organization. They oversee medical equipment maintenance, manage technical staff, and often hold certifications such as CBET or CCE to enhance their earning potential.

Can engineering managers work remotely?

Remote work for engineering managers is common in many industries, especially with the increased use of collaboration tools like video conferencing and project management software. However, the feasibility depends on the company's policies, the nature of the projects, and the need for on-site equipment or team coordination. Many organizations offer flexible or fully remote positions for engineering managers, provided they have strong communication and leadership skills.

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

In the field of engineering, senior roles such as engineering directors, principal engineers, or specialized consultants can earn $500,000 or more annually, especially in high-demand industries like technology, aerospace, or oil and gas. These positions typically require extensive experience, advanced skills, and often involve leadership or highly technical expertise.

Job description

Overview

SW Engineering Manager - Remote (EST/EDT) | Health-Tech

We're building technology that helps clinicians deliver better substance use disorder (SUD) care, and we're looking for a SW Engineering Manager to lead a remote, high-performing product development team. In this role, you'll own delivery outcomes, guide technical direction, and shape the culture of a team shipping software that directly impacts patient care.

You'll be the bridge between SW engineering execution and cross-functional partners in Product, Clinical Operations, Data, and Vendors, ensuring your team is aligned, supported, and set up for sustainable success in a fast-paced health-tech environment.

This position is fully remote, however, for this role, we are prioritizing candidates who align with the Eastern time zone (EDT/EST) for consistent overlap and availability with our core clinical and operational teams.

Responsibilities

What you'll do

  • Lead, mentor, and manage a remote team of software engineers, fostering accountability, psychological safety, and continuous improvement.
  • Drive Agile delivery: run sprint planning, standups, reviews, and retros; keep backlog healthy and cadence predictable.
  • Own end-to-end delivery of engineering commitments, balancing feature delivery with technical debt and quality.
  • Partner with Product to refine requirements, define acceptance criteria, and align work with roadmap and clinical/business priorities.
  • Monitor team metrics (velocity, burndown, quality), remove blockers, and proactively manage risks and dependencies.
  • Participate in architecture discussions and code reviews, upholding best practices, security, and compliance (including HIPAA).
  • Collaborate with data, clinical, and operations teams on integrations, data pipelines, and workflow technology.
  • Manage vendor and outsourced engineering relationships, setting expectations and ensuring accountability for delivery.
Qualifications

What you bring

  • 4+ years as an Engineering Manager leading Agile, remote software teams.
  • 5-10 years of hands-on software engineering experience, ideally with full-stack web development (Ruby on Rails / React), cloud (Azure or AWS), APIs, and relational databases.
  • Proven track record of delivering complex software products on time while maintaining high code quality and system reliability.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; able to translate technical concepts for executives, clinical stakeholders, and vendor partners.
  • Experience working with distributed, nearshore/offshore, or vendor-supported engineering teams.
  • Leadership style grounded in servant leadership, coaching, and building inclusive, high-trust team cultures.
  • Experience in healthcare, health-tech, a bonus, or other regulated industries (e.g., finance, insurance).
  • Familiarity with EMR/EHR integrations, clinical workflow tools, or healthcare data standards preferred.
  • Exposure to data platform engineering, ETL pipelines, or data infrastructure.
  • Work setup & requirementsRemote-first role: you work from your chosen EST zone based location with reliable internet (minimum 10M download / 5M upload and strong WiFi signal).
  • Must meet applicable state and role-specific background requirements (which may include fingerprinting, drug testing, health screening, and license/credential verification as required).
  • Reasonable accommodations available to support individuals with disabilities in performing essential functions.

If you're a servant leader who enjoys developing engineers, refining delivery processes, and building products that make a real difference in behavioral health, we'd love to hear from you. Click Apply to start the conversation.
