The Remote Clinical Engineering Manager focuses on overseeing clinical engineering teams and projects remotely, emphasizing management skills and strategic planning. In contrast, the Clinical Engineer is more hands-on, directly maintaining and troubleshooting medical equipment on-site. Both roles require similar certifications and work within healthcare environments, but their primary responsibilities and work settings differ.

What is a remote clinical engineering manager?

A Remote Clinical Engineering Manager is a professional who oversees the maintenance, safety, and performance of medical equipment and technology for healthcare facilities, but manages these responsibilities from a remote location. They lead teams of clinical engineers and technicians, develop equipment management programs, ensure regulatory compliance, and coordinate with healthcare staff to support patient care. This role often involves managing service contracts, budgeting, and implementing new technologies, all while leveraging digital tools for remote supervision and communication.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote clinical engineering manager?

To thrive as a Remote Clinical Engineering Manager, you need a strong background in biomedical engineering, healthcare technology management, and leadership, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree and experience in clinical environments. Familiarity with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), medical device integration platforms, and certifications such as CCE (Certified Clinical Engineer) are common requirements. Outstanding communication, problem-solving, and project management skills set top performers apart, especially when leading distributed teams. These competencies are crucial for ensuring the safety, compliance, and efficiency of medical equipment across remote healthcare facilities.

How does a remote clinical engineering manager effectively oversee and support on-site biomedical teams from a distance?

As a Remote Clinical Engineering Manager, you will leverage digital tools to monitor workflow, manage preventive maintenance schedules, and provide technical support to on-site biomedical teams. Regular virtual meetings and cloud-based reporting systems help maintain open communication and ensure team alignment. Building strong relationships with hospital staff and technicians is essential, as you’ll often resolve issues and coordinate projects remotely. Successful managers in this role develop clear protocols for escalation, foster a culture of accountability, and stay proactive about compliance and safety standards across multiple locations.

Job description

About the Team

You will join a team dedicated to removing HME ordering bottlenecks and streamlining the flow of clinical information between prescribers and payors. The team's mission is to eliminate communication friction, deliver coverage policy transparency, and ensure patients receive timely care.

About the Role

We are seeking an Engineering Manager to grow our engineers and our engineering practice. You will leverage your deep technical expertise to mentor your team, make informed decisions about technical direction, and provide meaningful feedback in code reviews and architecture discussions.

This role will be responsible for coaching up to 5 engineers, providing strategic technical oversight, and guiding the engineering practices of the team to deliver organizational impact.

Responsibilities

  • Coach and Mentorship: Manage up to 5 engineers, prioritizing their career growth, technical development, and day-to-day support.
  • Team Execution & Delivery: Take accountability for your team's goals and roadmap execution. Proactively identify and remove blockers to keep projects moving efficiently.
  • Strategic Technical Oversight: Review Architecture Decision Documents (ADDs), conduct pre-launch risk assessments, and ensure systems align with company goals.
  • Technical Shaping: Lead early technical discovery, feasibility analysis, and capacity estimation for future projects.
  • Maintain Relevance: Stay close to the code through regular PR reviews, design discussions, and incident retrospectives
  • Targeted Contributions: Allocate 10-20% of your time to technical work, prioritizing pairing and targeted tickets over daily feature development.
  • Engineering Excellence: Guide engineering practices across teams using agile methods, TDD, and robust software design principles.
  • Stakeholder Management: Act as the primary representative and point of contact for your team, ensuring clear communication with Product, Design, leadership, and cross-functional partners.

Requirements

  • Professional experience with open source programming languages
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience delivering software in a production environment
  • Minimum of 3 years of management experience
  • Must reside in the U.S.

Nice to Have

  • Professional experience with Ruby on Rails, React, or TypeScript
  • Healthcare Interoperability Standards: Exposure to FHIR, HL7, or integrating with major EHR systems (Epic, Cerner, etc.)
  • Rules Engines & Workflow Automation: Experience building or maintaining rules engines, decision trees, or dynamic form/survey infrastructure
  • Experience working cross-functionally to improve business process
  • Experience as technical lead on projects working with UX/UI design and/or product management.

Benefits

  • Medical, Dental, and Vision Coverage: Comprehensive plans with options for low-to-no-cost premiums.
  • Employer HSA Contribution: Company-funded contributions to your Health Savings Account.
  • 401(k) Retirement Plan
  • Equity Incentive Plan
  • Annual Company-Wide Bonus: Opportunity for up to 15% bonus based on company performance.
  • Remote-First Culture: We are remote-first with a dedicated NYC office and reimbursement options for co-working spaces.
  • Flexible Vacation Policy
  • Summer Fridays: 5 additional Fridays off during the summer (separate from PTO).
  • Home Office and Wellness Stipend
  • Monthly Internet Stipend
  • Annual Learning and Development Stipend

Base Salary Band (based on experience and level)
