What is a remote AWS database administrator?

A Remote AWS Database Administrator is an IT professional who manages and maintains cloud-based databases hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS) from a remote location. Their responsibilities include installing, configuring, monitoring, securing, and optimizing AWS database services such as Amazon RDS, Aurora, DynamoDB, and Redshift. They ensure data integrity, backup and recovery, and high availability while troubleshooting issues and implementing performance improvements. Working remotely, they use AWS management tools and follow best practices to support organizational data needs. This role typically requires strong knowledge of AWS services, SQL, security best practices, and automation tools.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote AWS database administrator?

To thrive as a Remote AWS Database Administrator, you need strong expertise in database management, cloud computing, and AWS services, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with tools like Amazon RDS, Aurora, DynamoDB, CloudWatch, and relevant AWS certifications such as AWS Certified Database - Specialty is highly valued. Excellent problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and the capacity to work independently are crucial soft skills for this remote role. These competencies ensure secure, efficient, and reliable database operations, which are vital for supporting scalable and high-performing cloud-based applications.

What are the common challenges faced by remote AWS database administrators and how can they be addressed?

Remote AWS Database Administrators often encounter challenges such as managing database performance across distributed environments, ensuring data security, and coordinating with geographically dispersed teams. To address these, it is important to leverage AWS monitoring tools like CloudWatch, implement best practices for encryption and access control, and maintain clear communication channels with development and operations teams. Proactively automating routine maintenance and backups also helps minimize downtime and ensures data integrity while working remotely.

Job description

About LearnLux

LearnLux is the leading global provider of workplace financial wellbeing, blending fiduciary digital planning with access to one-on-one guidance from Certified Financial Planner™️ professionals. Our award-winning program helps employees navigate critical financial decisions from budgeting and benefits elections to equity compensation, home buying, and retirement so they can feel confident about their money and focused at work. Today, we're proud to serve some of the largest companies in the world.

We're building LearnLux with intention. We move quickly, operate with a high bar for quality, and value people who take ownership of their work. If you're energized by solving new problems, taking accountability, and pushing yourself to do your best work every day, you'll find this a rewarding environment.

We're a venture-backed company that has raised a series B and is supported by experienced investors and long-term partners. We're a growth-focused business building for scale, and we're excited by the opportunities and challenges that come with that journey.

The Role

At LearnLux, you will build a product that changes lives. Our mission is to empower people to take control of their financial future, whether that means getting out of debt, buying their first home, or preparing for retirement. As a Senior Software Engineer, you'll contribute directly to this mission by designing and building scalable backend systems that power our enterprise-grade SaaS product.

In this role, you'll lead and execute projects to tackle the complex technical challenges that come with scaling an enterprise platform. This includes distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, data architecture and pipelines, and AI-enabled features. You will play a critical role in delivering reliable, secure, and scalable systems while partnering closely with your team to execute against product and technical priorities.

We are a small, agile engineering team, and this role is hands-on. You'll be expected to operate effectively in a fast-moving startup environment, balancing execution, ambiguity, and evolving priorities. You'll spend the majority of your time building and shipping high-quality systems while collaborating closely with engineers, product managers, and data partners. You'll contribute to system design, improve engineering practices, and help drive projects forward with a strong sense of ownership. If you're excited by building impactful systems, working across the stack, and contributing to the future of financial wellness, we'd love to meet you.

This role is based in Denver, Colorado. Remote candidates will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

What you'll do
  • Design and build backend services and systems that support LearnLux's enterprise SaaS platform.
  • Design and work with data systems, including SQL databases, pipelines, and data warehouses, to support product and operational needs.
  • Run parallel AI-assisted coding sessions, continuously refining plans while shipping across multiple threads of work in real time.
  • Develop and maintain cloud infrastructure for reliability and performance, primarily on GCP (with AWS experience welcomed).
  • Apply strong engineering fundamentals to ensure systems are secure, reliable, compliant, and scalable.
  • Work with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Pulumi (preferred) or Terraform to maintain consistent and scalable environments.
  • Collaborate with product, design, and data teams to translate requirements into well-scoped technical solutions.
  • Drive engineering efficiency through automation, including the use of AI-driven or agentic systems to improve developer workflows, operations, and internal tooling.
  • Support global performance, reliability, and operational excellence.
  • Contribute to documentation and knowledge sharing across the engineering team.
You should bring
  • Hands-on experience with data systems, including SQL databases, data pipelines, and data warehouses.
  • Backend engineering experience, including ownership of scalable production systems in a SaaS environment.
  • Solid understanding of distributed systems concepts and cloud infrastructure.
  • Hands-on experience with Node.js and/or Python. Other language experience is welcome so long as you're willing to learn and work in these.
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure, GCP preferred (AWS experience acceptable).
  • Experience working effectively in a startup or similarly fast-moving, resource-constrained environment.
  • Familiarity with security and compliance considerations in production systems.
  • Experience using automation and AI-driven tools to improve developer productivity or system efficiency.
  • Ability to break down complex problems and execute within a defined scope.
  • Strong collaboration skills and ability to work effectively within a cross-functional team.
  • Clear communication skills in technical discussions and project execution.
It would be great if you also
  • Experience contributing to larger architectural initiatives (e.g., multi-tenancy, platform scaling).
  • Experience in financial technology, regulated, or compliance-heavy enterprise SaaS environments.
LearnLux is a fit for you if you
  • Thrive in fast-moving environments and enjoy building in moments of change. We operate with urgency, and roles, priorities, and approaches evolve as we grow.
  • Like wearing multiple hats and helping define the path forward. At LearnLux, roles evolve as we grow, and employees often help create clarity, structure, and direction where it didn't previously exist.
  • Take initiative and don't wait to be asked. You see problems as opportunities and are comfortable stepping in to move work forward.
  • Are energized by ambiguity and willing to make decisions with imperfect information. We learn quickly by doing, and pace is a competitive advantage for us.
  • Enjoy being hands-on and owning work end to end. While strategic thinking matters, execution, follow-through, and accountability are what drive impact here.
  • Are motivated by high standards and continuous improvement. As we hit new milestones, we intentionally raise the bar on quality, ownership, and outcomes.
  • Value clear, frequent communication and collaboration. As a remote team, staying aligned through proactive communication is core to how we operate.
Benefits
  • Remote-first company structure
  • Medical, dental, and vision
  • 401(k)
  • Mental wellbeing (Talkspace)
  • Financial wellbeing (LearnLux)
  • Paid vacation and sick leave
  • Paid sabbatical after 5 years of service
  • A supportive, inclusive team culture
  • Opportunities for continuous learning and growth at a fast-growing startup at the cutting edge intersection of financial wellness and technology
