What is a remote automotive test engineer?

A Remote Automotive Test Engineer is a professional who designs, conducts, and analyzes tests on automotive systems, components, or software from a remote location. They use specialized tools and software to simulate real-world driving conditions, diagnose performance issues, and verify compliance with safety standards. Working remotely, they collaborate with on-site teams, prepare detailed reports, and may oversee automated test setups. This role requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication abilities.

How does a remote automotive test engineer effectively collaborate with on-site teams during testing cycles?

Remote Automotive Test Engineers often coordinate closely with on-site teams through virtual meetings, shared testing protocols, and cloud-based data platforms. Strong communication skills are essential, as engineers must relay findings, troubleshoot issues, and sometimes guide on-site staff in implementing test procedures or equipment setup. Regular check-ins and detailed documentation help ensure alignment despite physical distance. Many companies use project management tools and video conferencing to maintain seamless collaboration and workflow.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote automotive test engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Automotive Test Engineer, you need a solid background in automotive engineering, vehicle systems, and testing methodologies, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with automotive diagnostic tools, test automation software, and data acquisition systems is typically required, along with certifications like ISTQB or ASE being advantageous. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective remote communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with distributed teams and accurately reporting results. These skills ensure precise evaluation of vehicle performance and reliability, helping manufacturers deliver safe and high-quality products to market.

What is the difference between Remote Automotive Test Engineer vs Remote Automotive Quality Assurance Tester?

Job description

About the Opportunity

SigmaCorps Solutions is seeking a Senior Test Engineer to support USMC Ground-Based Air Defense fixed-site efforts under the GBAD Engineering and Logistics (E&L) program. This is a backfill of an established CLIN 005 billet on the Fixed Site task order, not a newly created position — the work, the customer relationships, and the test cadence are already in motion.

Test Engineers actively participate in program meetings to stay current on program activities and system capabilities. The role conducts thorough examinations of Marine Air Defense Integrated System (MADIS) Family of Systems engineering and test documentation, supports future test planning and events, develops test procedures, operates the system under test, provides post-test data analysis support, and aids in the creation and review of test plans and reports. The position directly supports the C2/C4 IPT and C2 test procedure development, execution, test design, and analysis.

What You'll Do

•    Actively participate in working groups supporting analysis, metrics, and requirements development.

•    Develop test architectures, test procedures, and test briefs.

•    Contribute to Data Management and Collection Plans and analysis reports.

•    Perform on-site data collection, reduction, and analysis.

•    Manage the Data Availability & Traceability Matrix.

•    Coordinate test schedules between the program, ranges, agencies, and support teams.

•    Analyze system requirements and recommend test methods and test approach.

•    Review all test reports from internal and external agencies; identify trends, deficiencies, and improvements.

•    Support the development of daily test and status reports.

•    Identify test and evaluation (T&E) associated risks and provide input for risk resolution and mitigation.

What We're Looking For

Required

•    Five or more years of experience in the specific field plus a bachelor’s degree, or 10+ years of direct and applicable work experience.

•    Previous direct experience testing, evaluating, and operating and/or maintaining aviation or ground command and control (C2), weapons, or information exchange systems.

•    Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

•    Active Secret security clearance, with the ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret clearance.

Preferred

•    Master’s degree in a relevant field.

•    Prior experience with the Marine Air Defense Integrated System (MADIS) Family of Systems.

•    Experience supporting fixed-site air defense or Counter-UAS fielding and test activities.

•    Familiarity with Data Availability & Traceability Matrix management and DoD test documentation practice.

Certifications & Training

The following Defense Acquisition University (DAU) coursework is required after hire on the timelines below. SigmaCorps supports completion as part of the onboarding and development plan. Course numbers reflect the current DAU catalog; legacy numbers are shown where they differ.
