Howย You'llย Make an Impactย 

The As-Needed Arborist provides professional arboricultural services in support of tree inventories, urban forest assessments, tree risk evaluations, and natural resource planning efforts. The position requires extensive fieldwork, accurate data collection, and the ability to work independently under varying environmental conditions. This position will require travel throughout Southern California and surrounding regions. Field assignments may occur in highly urbanized areas, oak woodlands, natural open spaces, riparian corridors, mountain foothills, and desert environments. Work schedules are project dependent and may vary based on seasonal field conditions and client needs.

Duties and Responsibilitiesย ย 

  • Perform tree inventories and assessments on city streets, parks, and other urban areas as well as oak woodlands, desert environments, and undeveloped lands.
  • Accurately record tree inventory data like tree species, diameter at standard height (DSH), canopy spread, and tree height and assess health and structural conditions using the ESRI Field Map data collection platform.
  • ย Evaluate tree health, maintenance needs, structural defects, and potential risk conditions.
  • ย Ensure data quality and consistency with industry standards and project requirements.
  • Adhere to all safety procedures while working near roadways, active onstruction sites, and remote field locations.
  • Perform other arboricultural and urban forestry duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist.
  • Minimum of two years of experience conducting tree inventories, tree assessments, or urban forestry fieldwork.
  • ย Ability to accurately identify common tree species found in Southern California urban, natural, and desert environments.
  • ย Ability to work independently and efficiently.
  • Knowledge of arboricultural best management practices and ANSI A300 standards.
  • ย BS in forestry or closely related field or formal training in arboriculture or urban tree management.
  • Experience using GIS-based field data collection tools, GPS units, and inventory software.
  • ย Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites.

Preferred Qualifications

  • ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ).
  • Experience with various inventory types including municipal, oak woodland, and Joshua trees.
  • Experience using ArcGIS Pro, Field Maps, Survey123, or Collector.

Compensation: $30-$40/hourly*ย 

*Finalย agreed-upon compensation will be based on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, an individual's related experience, education, certifications, skills, and work location. Successful candidates must pass a pre-employment drug test and background check prior to beginning employment.ย

  • This jobย operatesย in a remote or office-basedย environmentย and this role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, printers, etc.ย 
  • Thisย job requires occasional project site visits, based outdoors which can include excessive noise, uneven walking surfaces, extreme weather, and moving vehicles and equipment.ย

  • Ability to walk long distances on uneven terrain.
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in varied weather conditions.
  • Ability to work in urban environments, parks, open spaces, canyons, and desert landscapes.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds. Ability to traverse steep slopes, loose soils, and undeveloped terrain.
