What is a remote addiction counselor?

A remote addiction counselor is a licensed professional who provides support, guidance, and treatment for individuals struggling with substance use disorders or addictive behaviors, all through virtual means such as video calls, phone calls, or online messaging. These counselors help clients develop coping strategies, set recovery goals, and access resources from the comfort and privacy of their own homes. Remote addiction counseling offers flexibility and accessibility, making it easier for people to seek help regardless of their location or circumstances.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Addiction Counselor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Addiction Counselor, you generally need a degree in counseling, psychology, or social work, along with relevant state licensure or certification in addiction counseling. Familiarity with telehealth platforms, electronic health records (EHRs), and secure communication tools is essential for delivering remote support. Strong interpersonal skills, empathy, active listening, and the ability to build trust remotely are crucial soft skills. These capabilities ensure effective client engagement, confidentiality, and positive outcomes in virtual addiction recovery settings.

What are some common challenges faced by remote addiction counselors, and how can they effectively address them?

Remote addiction counselors often encounter challenges such as building rapport with clients through virtual platforms, ensuring client privacy, and managing feelings of isolation due to working outside a traditional office. To address these, counselors can utilize secure, HIPAA-compliant video conferencing tools to foster trust and confidentiality, engage in regular virtual team meetings for peer support, and participate in ongoing professional development. Establishing clear communication channels and maintaining structured routines also help create a supportive and effective remote work environment.

About This Opportunity

In this role, you'll deliver evidence-based, transformative care to individuals and families navigating addiction and co-occurring mental health challenges. This is an ideal opportunity for licensed psychologists who are passionate about telehealth innovation, trauma-informed care, and helping clients build sustainable recovery and wellness.
About the Role
As a Telehealth Therapist at All Points North, you'll be part of a mission-driven organization committed to delivering accessible, high-quality mental health and addiction treatment. You'll work within an interdisciplinary team that values clinical excellence, evidence-based practice, and compassionate care. Your work will directly impact clients' recovery journeys and help families rebuild stronger, healthier relationships. You'll have access to ongoing supervision, professional development opportunities, and a supportive clinical community.
Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver individual, group, and family therapy via secure telehealth in an Intensive Outpatient (IOP) setting
  • Facilitate psychoeducational, experiential, and process-oriented group sessions
  • Conduct comprehensive psychosocial evaluations and develop individualized, evidence-based treatment plans
  • Provide ongoing clinical assessments, progress monitoring, and discharge planning
  • Deliver therapeutic interventions tailored to each client's stage of change, dependence, and recovery journey
  • Assess individual and family systems to identify strengths, challenges, and opportunities for growth
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary clinical teams, case management, families, and referral sources to ensure coordinated, comprehensive care
  • Maintain accurate, compliant documentation in our electronic medical record (EMR) system, including progress notes, clinical updates, and incident reports
  • Participate in case staffings, team meetings, clinical supervision, and required professional trainings
  • Provide clinical consultation, psychoeducation, and evidence-based referrals consistent with the All Points North treatment model
  • Develop and nurture partnerships with community providers to support continuity of care and recovery integration
  • Stay current with research findings and apply outcome data to enhance clinical practice
Required Qualifications
  • Education: Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology (Ph.D. or PsyD) from an accredited institution
  • Licensure: Active, unrestricted clinical psychology license in good standing in a Psychology Interjurisdictional Compact (PSYPACT)-eligible state. PSYPACT Passport certification is required throughout employment. (The Psychology Interjurisdictional Compact facilitates the practice of telepsychology and temporary in-person practice across state lines.)
  • Minimum one (1) year of clinical experience treating individuals with addiction and/or mental health disorders in a structured setting (Residential Treatment Center, Partial Hospitalization Program, or Intensive Outpatient Program)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of addiction, trauma, and mental health theories, including principles of recovery, developmental trauma, substance effects, and evidence-based treatment modalities
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build therapeutic rapport and work effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team
  • Proficiency with electronic medical records (EMR) and basic computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite)
  • High moral and ethical standards; commitment to NAADAC (or equivalent) ethical guidelines
  • Successful completion of background check, drug screening, criminal record clearance, and credential verification
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in trauma-informed therapy and trauma treatment modalities
  • Familiarity with web-based clinical platforms and telehealth best practices
  • Experience working with diverse populations and multicultural competence
  • Prior experience in a telehealth or virtual care environment
  • Knowledge of family systems theory and family-centered treatment approaches
Essential Professional Attributes
  • Openness to ongoing learning, professional development, and clinical supervision
  • Ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries while building strong therapeutic relationships
  • Sound judgment, maturity, and professional demeanor in all client and team interactions
  • Flexibility and adaptability to accommodate evolving clinical needs and scheduling adjustments
  • Commitment to addressing conflict constructively and collaboratively within the treatment team
  • Genuine passion for supporting individuals and families in recovery and mental health transformation
