What does a reliability engineer do?

A Reliability Engineer focuses on ensuring that systems, equipment, and processes operate dependably and efficiently over time. Their main responsibilities include analyzing failure data, identifying potential risks, and developing strategies to minimize downtime and maintenance costs. They work closely with design, maintenance, and production teams to improve product quality, safety, and reliability. By implementing reliability testing and preventive maintenance plans, they help organizations achieve higher performance and customer satisfaction.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a reliability engineer?

To thrive as a Reliability Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, data analysis, and failure mode analysis, typically supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with tools like FMEA, Root Cause Analysis (RCA), reliability modeling software, and relevant certifications such as Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE) are commonly required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help Reliability Engineers collaborate and proactively address system weaknesses. These skills are essential for minimizing downtime, optimizing maintenance strategies, and ensuring long-term operational efficiency.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in reliability engineering roles, and how can they be addressed?

Reliability Engineers often face the challenge of balancing immediate production demands with long-term equipment health and system improvements. They must analyze complex failure data, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and drive changes that may require operational adjustments. To address these challenges, it's important to develop strong communication skills, stay current with reliability methodologies (like FMEA and RCA), and foster a culture of proactive maintenance. Building relationships with operations and maintenance teams also helps ensure that reliability recommendations are adopted and sustained.

What is the difference between Reliability vs Maintenance Technician?

AspectReliabilityMaintenance Technician
Required credentialsCertifications in reliability engineering, asset management, or predictive maintenanceTechnical diploma or certification in maintenance, HVAC, or mechanical systems
Work environmentFocus on analyzing data, improving systems, and preventing failures in industrial or manufacturing settingsHands-on repair, troubleshooting, and maintenance of equipment and machinery
Employer and industry usageUsed in manufacturing, energy, and industrial sectors to optimize equipment performanceCommonly employed in factories, plants, and facilities for equipment upkeep

Reliability professionals focus on analyzing data and implementing strategies to prevent equipment failures, while maintenance technicians perform hands-on repairs and routine maintenance. Both roles are essential for operational efficiency but differ in their focus and approach.

How to become a reliability specialist?

To become a reliability specialist, typically a bachelor's degree in engineering, manufacturing, or a related field is required. Gaining experience in maintenance, quality assurance, or engineering, along with knowledge of reliability tools like FMEA or RCM, is important. Certifications such as Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE) can enhance job prospects.

What are some reliable jobs?

Reliable jobs are typically those with consistent demand and stable employment, such as roles in healthcare, education, government, and skilled trades. These positions often offer steady hours, benefits, and opportunities for advancement, making them suitable for long-term employment.

Job description

Amazon is seeking an Operations Reliability Engineer to support the Amazon Logistics North America (AMZL NA) Engineering team, part of Amazon's Last Mile organization. The Last Mile team helps get customer packages from delivery stations to a customer's doorstep.
This is a unique opportunity to own reliability programs and mechanisms that advance the intelligence of our last mile business. We are looking for an individual who has experience creating scalable, data-driven solutions to complex reliability and engineering problems

In this role, you will be responsible for driving proactive reliability across delivery station processes, equipment, and operations-hunting down the true causes of failures, eliminating them before they recur, and getting ahead of problems through systematic risk identification and mitigation.
As a customer-obsessed leader, you will lead high-impact failure investigations, turn data into clear actions, and drive measurable improvements in uptime and performance across the network. You will design and enhance the tools, dashboards, and methodologies that enable the organization to learn from failures and prevent them at scale. Partnering with internal customers and internal/external stakeholders, you will ensure reliability improvements are executed on time and deliver lasting results.
Key competencies of this position include insisting on the highest standards in root cause quality and corrective action effectiveness; analyzing and deep diving systems performance; inventing and simplifying solutions that improve equipment reliability and operational processes; and providing technical expertise to internal customers and stakeholders.
Key job responsibilities
Reliability Engineering & Root Cause Analysis
Lead Root Cause Analysis (RCA) for high-impact and recurring failures, driving deep-dive investigations to identify true root causes and ensure effective, lasting corrective actions
Develop, maintain, and continuously improve Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) to proactively identify risks, prioritize mitigation, and prevent future failures
Analyze equipment and operational data to identify trends, systemic issues, and performance gaps, translating findings into actionable reliability improvements
Lead cross-functional reliability improvements by partnering with operations, engineering, maintenance, and external vendors across multiple sites and regions
Conduct technical deep dives into advanced technology applications, conveyor systems, and material handling integration to identify reliability risks and design-out failure modes
Develop innovative solutions through collaboration with vendors, suppliers, and cross-functional teams
Data Analytics & Business Intelligence
Create and maintain BI dashboards, and data visualizations to ensure transparency, predictability, and data-driven prioritization with all stakeholders
Analyze High-Impact Event (HIE) data to identify patterns, measure reliability performance, and inform engineering investment decisions across the network
Design and maintain automated reporting pipelines and performance dashboards (e.g., HIE trends, failure rates, uptime) that enable leadership and cross-functional teams to make data-driven decisions
Translate complex data sets into clear, compelling narratives and recommendations for stakeholders at all levels, supporting business reviews and program prioritization
A day in the life
In this role, you will drive reliability excellence across the Last Mile network in close partnership with RME (Reliability & Maintenance Engineering) and Engineering teams

Your typical day involves analyzing failure trends and HIE data to identify recurring issues, systemic gaps, and opportunities to improve reliability and performance. You will review high-impact events and completed RCAs to ensure quality, consistency, and actionable outcomes. A key focus is supporting FMEA initiatives by helping RME and Engineering partners proactively identify risks and implement effective mitigation strategies.
You will partner closely with RME teams and Engineering stakeholders to refine and improve tools, processes, and systems that support RCA and FMEA at scale

You'll facilitate planning and implementation meetings with RME leadership, Engineering program managers, and cross-functional partners to ensure alignment on objectives, expectations, and next steps-capturing and distributing comprehensive notes that drive accountability and follow-through on actions and decisions. You will collaborate with RME technicians, engineers, and regional stakeholders to align corrective actions, close the loop on reliability improvements, and strengthen how the organization learns from and prevents failures.
You will also develop and enhance BI tools, automated reporting, and dashboards that surface reliability insights to RME and Engineering leaders.
About the team
At Amazon, we embody a culture of ownership, embracing unique opportunities that span from firm engineering to project execution and final customer hand-off

Our diverse, upbeat, and innovative team of engineers and program managers works tirelessly to ensure our internal customers have the capabilities to deliver on the Customer Promise. We don't just build; we consistently enhance our systems and capabilities through continuous improvement, striving for both incremental and breakthrough developments. This commitment to excellence means we're constantly raising the quality bar and are never truly satisfied.

We capture lessons learned and incorporate them back into our mechanisms, perpetually improving our designs and processes with each iteration. Our approach to growth is holistic-we continually learn, develop, and expand our expertise throughout the organization, leveraging our subject matter knowledge on a global scale. Collaboration is at the heart of our ethos; we are a true team that supports, helps, and leverages each other's strengths to deliver on our business objectives.
