Industry UsageCommon in industries like oil & gas, power, manufacturingCommon in manufacturing, facilities management

The Reliability Superintendent focuses on developing and implementing strategies to improve equipment reliability and reduce downtime, often overseeing reliability engineers. What are some of the main challenges a Reliability Superintendent faces when implementing new maintenance strategies?

Reliability Superintendents often encounter challenges such as resistance to change from maintenance teams, aligning cross-departmental priorities, and ensuring that new strategies are both cost-effective and sustainable. Successfully implementing new maintenance practices requires strong communication skills to educate staff, robust data analysis to justify changes, and close collaboration with operations, engineering, and procurement teams. Overcoming these hurdles is essential to drive long-term reliability improvements and reduce unplanned downtime.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Reliability Superintendent, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Reliability Superintendent, you need a strong background in engineering or maintenance management, extensive experience in reliability-centered maintenance (RCM), and often a relevant degree or certification such as CMRP (Certified Maintenance & Reliability Professional). Familiarity with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), predictive maintenance tools, and root cause analysis methodologies is typically required. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills are essential for driving continuous improvement and leading cross-functional teams. These skills are crucial for maximizing equipment uptime, optimizing asset performance, and ensuring operational efficiency in industrial environments.

Job description

Position Overview

The Superintendent is responsible for overseeing daily field operations and managing all jobsite activities from project startup through completion. This role ensures construction projects are delivered safely, on schedule, and in alignment with project plans, quality standards, and client expectations.

The Superintendent works closely with Project Managers, subcontractors, and design teams to coordinate work across all trades while maintaining a highly collaborative jobsite environment. This role also supports modern construction practices including Lean construction planning, pull-planning collaboration with trade partners, and digital coordination through BIM/VDC technologies to improve project efficiency and reduce conflicts before construction begins.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead daily field operations for commercial construction projects from mobilization through closeout.

  • Coordinate subcontractors, vendors, and field personnel to maintain project schedules and workflow.

  • Develop and maintain short-term look-ahead schedules and coordinate sequencing of trade work.

  • Enforce jobsite safety standards and ensure compliance with OSHA and company safety policies.

  • Monitor construction quality and ensure work is completed according to plans and specifications.

  • Facilitate jobsite coordination meetings and maintain communication between field teams and project management.

  • Identify and resolve field issues or conflicts before they impact project timelines.

  • Participate in pull planning and collaborative scheduling with trade partners to improve workflow reliability.

  • Support BIM/VDC coordination efforts by working with project teams to resolve constructability issues identified during digital modeling.

  • Maintain daily reports, safety documentation, and progress tracking.

  • Coordinate inspections, punch lists, and final project closeout activities.

Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience working as a Superintendent for a general contractor or construction management firm.

  • Proven experience managing field operations on commercial, institutional, hospitality, or mixed-use construction projects.

  • Strong understanding of construction sequencing, scheduling, and subcontractor coordination.

  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and schedules.

  • Strong leadership and communication skills with the ability to manage multiple trades on a jobsite.

  • Commitment to maintaining safe, organized, and productive construction environments.

Preferred Experience
  • Experience working on fast-track or complex commercial construction projects.

  • Familiarity with Lean construction practices and collaborative scheduling methods.

  • Experience coordinating with BIM or Virtual Design & Construction (VDC) teams.

  • OSHA 30 certification or equivalent safety training.

  • Experience with project management tools such as Procore, Bluebeam, or scheduling software.
