Position Summary
The Vice President, Controller serves as a key financial leader for the health system, responsible for the integrity, transparency, and strategic value of all financial reporting and accounting operations. This role acts as a trusted advisor to executive leadership, driving financial discipline, enabling data-driven decision-making, and supporting the organization's long-term financial strength and growth. This system level role leads core finance functions including general accounting, subsidiary and joint venture accounting, grants accounting, payroll, accounts payable, and finance systems. This role ensures compliance with regulatory and accounting standards while advancing automation, standardization, and scalability across the finance function. Other duties as assigned.
• Serve as a strategic partner to the SVP Finance and executive leadership team on financial performance, balance sheet strategy, and enterprise risk.
• Ensure timely, accurate, and transparent monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting across the system and affiliates. Elevate the role of accounting as a forward-looking, insight-generating function. Communicate financial results and key drivers clearly.
• Lead the modernization of the financial close process (speed, accuracy, automation, standardization). Emphasize automation and process improvement initiatives to reduce manual work and enhance analytics.
• Design, implement, and continuously improve a robust internal control environment that protects assets and ensures compliance. As part of this work, ensure finance policies and procedures reflect the operating philosophy of the organization and are fully compliant with standard accounting principles and legal/regulatory requirements.
• Oversee consolidated financial statements, including complex areas such as affiliations, eliminations, and healthcare-specific accounting. Ensure compliance with GAAP, regulatory requirements, and healthcare-specific reporting obligations.
• Oversee payroll, accounts payable, and finance systems teams, emphasizing automation and optimization.
• Lead all external audits and coordinate tax filings, ensuring a smooth and efficient audit process.
• Lead finance systems strategy and optimization, including ERP, financial reporting tools, and data governance.
• Collaborate across the organization to fully leverage integrated systems (i.e., ERP) and ensure alignment and function connectivity (i.e., IT, revenue cycle, operations, treasury, and decision support).
• Build, lead, and develop a high-performing finance organization across accounting, payroll, accounts payable, and finance systems. Establish clear performance expectations, accountability, and a culture of continuous improvement. Develop leadership bench strength and succession plans within the finance hierarchy.
• Provide accounting and financial guidance on strategic transactions and new business models. A key enabler of this is to remain current with accounting pronouncements and business matters related to health care management along with federal and regulatory requirements associated with this job.
Education requirements
Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field required. Certified Public Accountant (CPA) required. Master's degree in accounting or related field preferred. Deep expertise in GAAP and financial reporting in complex organizations required
Experience required
Ten years of progressive responsibility in leading a corporate finance program. Healthcare finance experience preferred, Public accounting experience preferred.
