Job description

Overview

This position is for employment with NYK Group Americas Inc.

This position is responsible for managing safe, efficient, and cost-effective operations of RoRo vessels in the region. Ensure this by coordinating and liaising with various NYK offices, vessels, agents, and port service providers. Act as Regional HQ for Operations supporting regional offices in the Americas.

Responsibilities
  • Overall supervision of Operational matters in the Americas, providing guidance and direction to NYK Port and Regional offices
  • Manage and support direct reports in office to execute Operational functions
  • Coordinate with Operations Team members to design and execute a voyage plan; reduce costs, mitigate loss of time, meet targets set by Trade/Commercial teams in charge of vessel P&L , and comply with important operational requirements such as CII regulation. This when NA is directly in charge of P&L and/or operational function is under NA Voyage Operator responsibilities
  • Track and monitor daily vessel operations executed by operators (instructions, coastal schedules, bunkers, VSR, system updates, collaboration with other teams and offices, communication with agents, overall CII reporting and analysis). Progress of vessels throughout area of responsibility especially any changes with schedules, hazardous weather, any issue or incident at specific port, delays, congestion and any kind of troubles which may impact vessel schedule and voyage P&L.)
  • Identify and analyze key issues in operations, generate reports to management and work with the team to come up with solutions and/or contingency plans to maintain schedules, along with minimizing delays and additional costs
  • Maintain a high-level overview of all vessels and services, ensuring voyage goals are achieved and developments are accurately managed and communicated throughout the organization  
  • Provide necessary support to the team and regional offices in the Americas regarding the Systems for Vessel Operation function (TOM, Flamingo, SGS etc.)
  • Develop and train Team in line with regional requirements and global expectations 
  • Establish and improve SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) for Vessel Operation functions
  • Provide regional news and key updates to the management, Tokyo HQ and other regional offices on a regular basis
  • Coordinate and host internal or external meetings based on the needs and requirements
  • Monitor agency and port service provider's performance and address the issue for further improvement
  • Develop short and long-term operational planning to create initiatives that further the company's overall goals
  • Coordinate with different teams to foster exchange of ideas and provide cross-team learning opportunities
  • Assess and analyze departmental budgets to find ways to minimize expenses and optimize profits 
  • Delegate work to employees, track progress and provide constructive feedback throughout projects
  • Review the current processes with BPM and other departments to determine improvements and efficiencies (Process Re-Engineering) 
  • Ensure employees adhere to company policies and legal regulations. Serve as a liaison between subordinates and upper management
  • Set performance goals and project deadlines that align with the company's larger plans
  • Inspire and motivate employees to perform at their best through positive encouragement 
  • Address performance issues between employees and other concerns in an effective timely manner 
  • Conduct performance reviews, motivate team members, and create strategies to boost productivity  
Qualifications
    • Possess strong communication, managerial, and leadership skills

    • Teamwork oriented and driven

    • Ability to multitask and prioritize workflow

    • Personal computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet). NYK systems for daily business

    • College degree preferred, high school diploma required
      WORK EXPERIENCE (Years of experience in the industry and functional area)
      10 + years industry experience preferred
      Compensation: $100,000-110,000

ADA REQUIREMENTS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (the following describes physical demands of the typical position)The employee is primarily seated while performing the duties of the position. Ability and willingness to attend vessels when in port to meet with vessel command. This to discuss overall operational matters on board, while navigating, and in port. Occasional walking, stooping, filing, lifting or standing is required in office. The hands are regularly used to write, type, file, key and handle or feel small controls and objects. The employee must frequently talk and be able to hear.
