Job Description
Responsible for ensuring the safety of aquatic facility patrons by preventing and responding to emergencies. This position MUST fulfill the duties of a lifeguard. Make regular inspections of the pool and its equipment to ensure that their condition is safe and sanitary. This position requires physical movement and working in both indoor and outdoor settings, including all types of weather conditions. This position will report to the full-time Aquatic Facility Supervisors.
Work Hours and Location: This position requires a combination of night, weekend, and occasional city holiday shifts with flexibility required. This position may be asked to work at other City of Raleigh Aquatic facilities as needed.
Duties and Responsibilities
Provide proper surveillance of the facility and patrons.
Enforce all aquatic facility policies, rules, and regulations.
Ensure the safety of aquatic facility participants, spectators, and staff by recognizing and responding to emergencies, providing first aid and lifesaving care in case of injury or sudden illness.
Report unsafe or unsatisfactory conditions and behaviors to the supervisor.
Identify hazardous conditions and eliminate or minimize them to ensure safety.
Maintain a clean, neat, and organized pool area and locker rooms.
Perform routine custodial care and maintenance of the facility and pool, including tasks such as vacuuming, collecting trash, and hanging life jackets.
Inspect the facility on a daily schedule and place equipment on the pool deck in preparation for daily operations.
Attend and participate in assigned meetings, training, orientations, and evaluations.
Exercise regularly to maintain fitness levels (strength and endurance).
Call swimmers out of the water during electrical storms and/or torrential rains.
Maintain responsibility for accurately completing accident reports.
Report to the assigned lifeguard station to provide patron surveillance for the designated zone of coverage.
Establish and maintain effective relationships with staff and the public, including tactful and courteous rule enforcement, with a commitment to superior customer service.
Assist users of the aquatic facility by providing information related to regulations and standards of conduct.
Retain information about site amenities, fees, and upcoming programs and events to meet the needs of aquatic patrons.
Remain current in all required certifications and trainings, including but not limited to American Red Cross Lifeguarding, First Aid, and CPR (once acquired).
Be responsible for additional similar or related duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
Applicants for this position should be well-rounded, organized, and self-starters. Thorough knowledge and application of lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques. Applicants must understand facility characteristics, rules, policies, and procedures. Must be enthusiastic about working with all populations, display personal maturity, have great communication and customer service skills, and have confidence in dealing with conflict resolution. Ability to speak, write, etc. in English fluently. Bilingual ability is helpful but not required. Consistently communicate through multiple devices such as phones, computers, and radios with patrons, co-workers, and supervisory staff. Applicants must have access to reliable transportation to commute to the facility or facilities served. Applicant must be at least 15 years of age to apply. Applicants will reflect the ability to effectively work as part of a team in a fast-paced, active recreational setting. Licensing and Certifications:
Must have current:
American Red Cross Lifeguarding with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid
(American Red Cross preferred; other agencies acceptable upon review).

Positions in this class typically require climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.
Heavy Work
Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. This position requires the ability to perform all skills to the objective that are part of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course.
Visual Acuity
The worker is required to have visual acuity to operate trucks, forklifts, cranes, and other equipment.
Working Conditions
The worker is subject to both environmental conditions: Activities occur inside and outside. The worker is subject to extreme heat: Temperature above 100 degrees for periods of more than one hour. The worker is subject to noise: There is sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level. The worker is subject to hazards: Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to chemicals (solvents, acids, caustics, etc.). The worker is subject to atmospheric conditions: One or more of the following conditions that affect the respiratory system or the skin: Fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, vapors, or poor ventilation. The worker is required to wear eye protection and hand protection.
