Come join our Team at Bend Parks and Recreation District! Bend Park and Recreation is looking for Instructors to teach adult and with-a-child cooking and baking classes.
About the job:
BPRD is looking for Enrichment Instructors with experience teaching demonstration or hands-on culinary arts classes to adults, seniors, and adults with children. This is a part-time position teaching one to eight single-session classes per season (Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer). We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in ethnic cuisines.
Enrichment Instructors provide leadership and supervision for assigned recreation program while also serving in a front-line lead role, providing safe and rewarding recreational opportunities for the community.
A day in the life:
Duties may include but are not limited to the following:
  • Interacts with youth and adults through enrichment activities by planning, organizing, implementing, and supervising activities designed to be developmentally appropriate and inclusive of all skill levels and abilities.
  • Communicates on a regular basis with Enrichment Supervisor, as well as patrons, participants, parent/guardians, and community partners regarding questions, concerns and emerging issues.
  • Identifies any needed equipment and addresses any program-specific risk management/safety issues.
  • Manages accidents and incidents according to procedures.
  • Helps ensure general upkeep and care of equipment, supplies and facilities used.

Schedule and Hours:
Work schedule will be determined together with Enrichment Supervisor, based on both classroom and instructor availability for Fall and Winter Programming.
Requirements
What you'll need for success:
Strong Knowledge of:
  • Recreational activity for which providing instruction and/or supervision;
  • Theory, principle and practices for specialized area; and
  • Curriculum and effective teaching methods for area of assignment.

Skill and Ability to:
  • Demonstrate competency in specialized area;
  • Communicate effectively with a diverse group of people;
  • Effectively prepare and present lessons to a variety of audiences taking into consideration age, abilities and levels;
  • Effectively handle disruptions and conflicts, and respond to customer service concerns and emergency situations as they arise; and
  • Work cooperatively with others and create a positive, constructive relationship with staff and customers.

What we're looking for:
Minimum Required Education, Experience, and Training:
  1. High School diploma or equivalent; college coursework or vocations training with emphasis in related field preferred; AND
  2. Two (2) years of professional level experience in area of specialty area; OR
  3. Any satisfactory combination of experience and training.
  4. Some teaching experience preferred.

License and certifications:
1. Some positions may require possession of or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire a valid First Aid/CPR certification.
2. Some positions may require possession of, or ability to obtain valid Oregon driver's license within 30 days with an acceptable driving history as defined by district driving policy.
Supervision Received:
Works under the supervision of the Enrichment Supervisor.
Supervision Exercised:
Exercises supervision of any volunteer classroom assistants.
Working Conditions:
  • Ability to walk and stand for sustained period of time with frequent climbing, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, and twisting.
  • The flow of work and character of duties involve normal mental and visual attention much or all of the time.
  • Physical exertion includes frequent walking, bending and the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds unassisted, pushing, pulling, and kneeling in order to store, set-up, and clean-up equipment and supplies.
  • Exposure to large crowds, uncooperative or difficult individuals, exposure to illness, and periods of continuous demand.

Selection Process:
Applicants are screened based upon their relevant knowledge, abilities, skills, experience, and training and willingness to learn the skills required for the position. An offer of employment is contingent on the verification of credentials and other information required by Bend Park & Recreation District policies, including a background check and a driving history review when driving is required for position.
