Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana is the state’s largest hunger relief organization and one of the leading food banks in the Feeding America Network. In additional to vital hunger relief programs in our 21-county service area, we also operate Fresh Connect Central, a regional produce cooperative for Feeding America, serve as a contract reclamation site for Kroger Central Division, and are a staging site for FEMA disaster response.

Position Purpose of Warehouse Receiving Associate: The Warehouse Receiving Associate will predominantly work on the receiving of product in all areas of Gleaners such as dry, cooler, and freezer product. Including tasks such as: load and unload shipments, put away finished production inventory, execute smooth receipt when receiving product, inventory counts. The Warehouse Associate will work with other staff daily to achieve warehouse standards for AIB and janitorial needs. All responsibilities and duties will further Gleaners’ mission to be a leader in the fight against hunger.

Essential Functions of Warehouse Receiving Associate:

  • Operate powered and manual warehouse equipment according to Gleaners and OSHA guidelines.
  • Accurately record received product, submit paperwork , and store product safely in the warehouse.
  • Perform various warehouse functions including:
    • Product receipt, loading and unloading of semis and box trucks.
    • Prepare product for distribution (including wrapping pallets and labeling orders) and order fulfillment by both case and pallet quantities.
    • Take direction as indicated by multiple sources.
    • Change tasks and job assignments based on daily warehouse needs.
  • Work safely and accurately with minimal supervision.
  • Ensure compliance and adherence to all food safety guidelines according to GFB, Feeding America, AIB, USDA, ISDH and any other applicable processes or regulations for safe and sanitary production and storage of all products.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience of Warehouse Receiving Associate:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent experience
  • Prior experience in customer service is desired
  • Knowledge and experience performing warehouse functions (safety procedures, product receipt, put-away, replenishment, inventory, order-fulfillment and shipment, etc.)

Other Relevant Skills and Abilities of the Warehouse Receiving Associate:

  • Ability to read, write and to understand instructions
  • Ability to communicate professionally and respectfully with all staff members, agencies, volunteers, and donors.
  • Ability to perform basic math functions, (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division)
  • Ability to count accurately and maintain accurate records.
  • Understands warehouse inventory.
  • Being able to identify good vs. bad produce.
  • Be accountable and meet deadlines on a consistent basis.
  • Maintain a positive attitude.
  • Ability to execute instructions with exacting (100% compliance) attention to detail.
  • Powered Industrial Truck (PIT) certification and experience preferred (or ability to be certified)

Work Environment & Physical Demands of Warehouse Receiving Associate

  • Ability to stand for long periods of time; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms.
  • Ability to lift and/or move 50 lbs. regularly and to push/pull 2,000 lbs. of product using manual and/or electric pallet jack.
  • Ability to communicate clearly.
  • Ability to operate machine, mechanical, and electrical equipment.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Warehouse/Distribution Environment with activity in refrigerated and freezer environment.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Abnormally Hot/Cold Environment and exposure to fumes/odors and dirt/dust.
  • Some exposure to outdoors (i.e. all-weather conditions) and office atmosphere.
  • Constant movement of vehicles and equipment; Machinery/equipment in use.
