What are reactor operators?

Reactor operators are highly trained professionals responsible for controlling and monitoring nuclear reactors in power plants or research facilities. They ensure the reactor operates safely and efficiently by adjusting controls, monitoring instruments, and following strict safety protocols. Reactor operators respond to abnormal conditions, conduct routine inspections, and are prepared to initiate emergency shutdowns if necessary. Their work is critical for maintaining safe and reliable nuclear energy production.

What is the difference between Reactor Operator vs Nuclear Plant Technician?

AspectReactor OperatorNuclear Plant Technician

Industry UsagePower plants, nuclear facilitiesPower plants, nuclear facilities

Reactor Operators primarily focus on controlling and monitoring nuclear reactors, ensuring safety and operational efficiency. Nuclear Plant Technicians support reactor operations through maintenance and troubleshooting. Both roles are essential in nuclear power plants, but Reactor Operators have more responsibility for direct reactor control and safety procedures.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Reactor Operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Reactor Operator, you need a strong understanding of nuclear physics, safety protocols, and operational procedures, often supported by a technical degree and a Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) license. Familiarity with control room instrumentation, simulation software, and radiation monitoring systems is essential. Attention to detail, calmness under pressure, and strong communication skills help operators effectively manage complex situations and coordinate with team members. These skills and qualities are critical for ensuring the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of nuclear reactors.

What are some common challenges Reactor Operators face during shift work, and how can these be managed?

Reactor Operators often work rotating shifts, which can disrupt sleep patterns and affect work-life balance. Managing fatigue, maintaining focus during long periods of monitoring, and staying vigilant during routine and emergency scenarios are key challenges. Operators can address these by following strict handover procedures, practicing effective stress management, and adhering to regulated rest periods. Teamwork and clear communication with supervisors and other operators are also essential to ensure safe and efficient plant operations.

Job description

Are you mechanically sharp, steady under pressure, and motivated by work thatย matters?ย ย

Do you take pride in keepingย systems running, spotting problems before they grow, and holding yourself to a highย standardย every shift? Are you ready to get in early, learn a system from the ground up, and grow with a company that is building something real?ย

Robinson Carbon is commissioning its first biochar reactorย in New Albany,ย Indianaย and is hiring operators who want to be part of bringing it onlineย from day one.ย

The Opportunity

Robinson Carbon is the industrial biochar platform of Robinson Lumber Company, a fifth-generation family businessย operatingย since 1893.ย Built onย over a century of operational discipline, Robinson Carbon brings secured wood residualsย and existingย industrial infrastructureย to one of the fastest-growing segments in carbon removal. Biochar production converts sawmill residues into a stable, high-carbon material that stores carbon for centuries while creating valuable inputs for agriculture, filtration, and building material markets.ย

As we bring theย equipmentย online, we are hiring up to three Reactor Operators to sustain Monday through Friday operations across day and night shifts. Operators who join now will work alongside the commissioning team, gaining hands-on knowledge ofย theย system as it comes to life. That early experience sets these individuals apart: they understand why the system isย designedย the way it is, how it behaves under varying conditions, and how to solve problems before they become downtime. As Robinson Carbon grows, those operators areย the first in line for senior roles and opportunities at future facilities.ย

This is a ground-floor role with real growth attached to it.

Why This Role Mattersย
  • The Reactor Operator is the foundation of production on site. Each shiftย you workย directly influences:ย
  • Reliability of carbon removal output and delivery to buyersย
  • Quality and consistency of biochar product across every batchย
  • Safety and integrity of the facility and its peopleย
  • Accuracy of the operational data used for carbon accounting and credit verificationย

This role connects day-to-day operations directly to Robinson Carbon's ability to deliver on its commitments and grow.

Whatย You'llย Be Responsible Forย Reactor Operationย
  • Operate the pyrolysis reactor using the Human Machine Interface (HMI), monitoring and adjusting temperatures, feedstock feed rates, and biochar output toย maintainย continuous production within defined process parametersย
  • Manage feedstock buffer bins to ensure uninterrupted reactor feed; coordinate movement and storage of finished biochar using forklifts and loadersย
  • Maintainย accurateย operational logs and clear shift handoff documentation; communicate effectively with the incoming shift and operations leadershipย
Quality Control and Testingย
  • Collect feedstock and biochar samples at defined intervals; perform basic lab preparation.ย
  • Record all data accurately to support carbon accounting and credit verification under applicable registry standardsย
  • Manage off-spec batches per established protocols; direct material toย alternative disposition as directedย
Maintenance and Troubleshootingย
  • Perform preventive maintenance tasks including lubrication of chains and bearings, filter cleaning, and routine equipment inspectionsย
  • Diagnose and resolve light to moderate mechanical issues including feedstock jams, conveyor faults, and filter blockagesย
  • Escalate equipment issues requiring outsideย expertiseย promptly and with clear documentationย
Safety and Complianceย
  • Follow all safety protocols and wearย required PPE at all times; contribute actively to a zero-incident culture on siteย
  • Identifyย and report potential hazards promptly;ย participateย in safety reviews and incident reportingย
  • Operate forklifts and bucket loaders safelyย in accordance withย certification requirements and site rulesย
The Kind of Operator Who Succeeds Hereย

This role is best suited for someone who is:

  • Mechanically confident and comfortable working with digital control systemsย
  • Steady and consistent, someone whose team can count on them every shiftย
  • Detail-oriented in recordkeeping and disciplined in following proceduresย
  • Proactive aboutย identifyingย issues and clear when communicating themย
  • Motivated by working on somethingย and buildingย expertiseย that grows with the companyย
Qualifications and Experienceย
  • Availability toย work dayย orย nightย shifts, Monday through Friday, as assigned by the production scheduleย
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and comfort operatingย digital control interfaces;ย previousย experience with high-temperature industrial equipment such as boilers, industrial dryers, or kilns is preferredย
  • Proficiencyย or willingness to become certified in forklift and loader operationย
  • Ability to work reliably in an industrial environment that includes heat, dust, and physical demands includingย lifting upย to 50ย lbsย and climbing laddersย
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical certifications or vocational training in industrial operations, HVAC, or a related field are a plusย
Why Robinson Carbonย
  • Comprehensive training onย pyrolysis technology, HMI systems, safety protocols, and carbon accounting proceduresย
  • Commissioning participation: operators hired now will be part of bringing theย equipment commissioning, gaining system-level knowledge that sets them apart as our operations growย
  • A stable Monday through Friday schedule with defined shift structure as production reaches steady stateย
  • Real career growth potential as Robinson Carbon expands; operators who come in at startup are naturally positioned for senior roles at future facilitiesย
  • The backing of a 130-year-old family business with the operational depth and stability of an established lumber and wood products company

At the heart of Robinson Lumber Company's growth and success is our longstanding commitment to core values, the personality traits that we value most in our colleagues.ย

  • Passionย for what we do
  • Generosityย to help othersย
  • Honestyย in everythingย
  • Courageย to speak your mindย
  • Independenceย to take smart risksย
  • Excellenceย in our pursuitsย
  • Curiosityย for new thingsย

ย If you are ready to take ownership of a hands-on role at a company building something that matters, we want to hear from you.ย ย
