Regular, Full-Time, Limited-Term (up to two (2) years with the possibility of extension), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research (CIMAR), located in Honolulu, Hawai'i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MONTHLY SALARY RANGE: $6,250 - $6,500/Mon.
DUTIES: Analyzes video annotation data generated by the DARC lab and potentially other sources to investigate deep-sea animal distributions and biogeography, animal-habitat associations, and/or the drivers of deep-sea community structure. May assist with video annotation, the identification of animals from video, and data management. Works collaboratively with faculty at the University of Hawaiยฟi's SOEST and with scientists at the Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center (PIFSC). Co-authors manuscripts describing the research for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals and scientific and other general public (outreach) presentations describing the research.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION: PhD from an accredited college or university in Biology, Ecology, Marine Biology, Oceanography, or related field.
EXPERIENCE: Up to three (0-3) years of experience (can include dissertation research) working with animal community datasets in any of the following disciplines: ecology, marine biology, or biological oceanography. Experience conducting ROV animal surveys. Experience with authorship or co-authorship of publications in a related field of study.
KNOWLEDGE: Knowledge of the biology and ecology of deep water animals and communities. Statistical knowledge of how to relate animal or community data to environmental variables.
ABILITIES & SKILLS: Good communication skills, both orally and in writing. Demonstrated skills in presenting scientific findings. Demonstrated skills in multiple analytical methods, with a particular emphasis on multivariate statistical modeling. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, especially in an academic setting. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to complete the UH Information Security Awareness Training (ISAT) within two (2) weeks from date of hire, and re-certify every twelve (12) months.
PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to work aboard vessels for up to six (6) weeks during ROV cruises. Post Offer/Employment Condition : Must be able to obtain medical clearance for embarking/working on research vessels or other appropriate vessels, which may include providing proof of required immunizations or obtaining the necessary immunizations as required by vessel, and maintain throughout duration of employment.
POLICY/REGULATORY REQUIREMENT: As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies, procedures, and trainings and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai'i's and/or business entity's policies, procedures, and trainings. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of deep-sea coral or sponge identification and taxonomy. Experience working with Darwin Core data standards. Geographic Information System (GIS) computer experience.
