What is an RCM engineer?

RCM Engineers, or Reliability-Centered Maintenance Engineers, are professionals responsible for developing and implementing maintenance strategies to ensure the reliability and efficiency of equipment and systems. They analyze equipment performance, identify failure modes, and help design maintenance plans that minimize downtime and maximize asset life. RCM Engineers often work in industries such as manufacturing, energy, and transportation, where equipment reliability is crucial. Their work improves safety, reduces costs, and increases productivity by proactively addressing potential equipment issues.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an RCM engineer?

To thrive as an RCM (Reliability-Centered Maintenance) Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical or electrical engineering, experience in maintenance strategies, and knowledge of asset management principles. Familiarity with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), reliability analysis software, and relevant certifications such as CMRP (Certified Maintenance & Reliability Professional) is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are vital soft skills for this role. These skills ensure the optimization of maintenance strategies, reduction of downtime, and maximization of asset reliability in industrial environments.

What are some common challenges faced by RCM engineers when implementing reliability-centered maintenance programs?

RCM Engineers often encounter challenges such as securing buy-in from cross-functional teams, accurately analyzing failure modes, and ensuring sufficient quality data is available for decision-making. Balancing the immediate pressures of production with the long-term benefits of reliability improvements can also be difficult. Successful RCM Engineers proactively communicate the value of RCM initiatives, collaborate closely with operations and maintenance staff, and utilize industry best practices to streamline analysis and implementation.

What is the difference between Rcm Engineer vs Maintenance Engineer?

AspectRcm EngineerMaintenance Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires engineering degree, certifications in reliability or maintenance managementRequires engineering or technical diploma, certifications in maintenance or equipment management
Work EnvironmentFocuses on reliability analysis, risk assessment, and maintenance planning in industrial settingsHandles routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs in manufacturing or facilities
Industry UsageCommon in oil & gas, petrochemical, power plants, and heavy industriesWidely used across manufacturing, facilities management, and industrial sectors

While both roles involve maintenance, Rcm Engineers focus on reliability-centered maintenance strategies to optimize equipment performance, whereas Maintenance Engineers handle day-to-day repairs and upkeep. Understanding these differences helps in selecting the right career path or job role.

Job description

At Commure, we're building the AI Operating System for healthcare, the foundation that defines how care is delivered, documented, and financed. Our platform spans the full care journey: Ambient AI and Dictation eliminating documentation burden at the point of care, intelligent Agents automating patient and revenue workflows, and autonomous RCM processing billions in claims, all on a single AI-native platform integrated with 60+ EHRs.

Healthcare carries a $1 trillion administrative burden and we're at the center of transforming it. Today, 500,000+ clinicians across 500+ healthcare organizations nationwide trust Commure to handle $25B+ in annual claims and support over 200 million patient interactions. Our latest $70M raise at a $7B valuation reflects the confidence the market has placed in this mission.

Our team works directly alongside clinicians, not through layers of process, which means the gap between what you build and its impact on patient care is immediate. We move fast, deploy daily, and take full ownership from early thinking to production. If you're energized by hard problems, high stakes, and a team that holds itself to a high bar, you'll find your people here.

The future of healthcare is being built right now. Come deliver this transformation.

About the Role

The Revenue Cycle Management (RCM) Product Team at Commure + Athelas powers the core operating system for our practices. Our product—Insights—provides practice staff and administrators with everything they need to efficiently manage their practice’s operations. We maintain 150+ customer-facing features, ranging from high-level reports and visualizations to workflow automation tools to help the staff boost their practice’s revenue.

As a Senior Software Engineer Engineer, you will play a key role in scaling and maintaining our website’s infrastructure, ensuring a seamless user experience as we grow to support thousands of practices nationwide.

Beyond development, this role will help define the technical direction of Insights’ architecture, shaping how and where services are built and deployed. You’ll help foster a culture of continuous improvement, enhancing the reliability, scalability, and performance of our web applications while elevating the technical skills of the entire engineering organization.

What You’ll Do
  • Drive the technical direction of our practice management platform, Insights, ensuring it scales to support thousands of practices and millions of users

  • Design, build, and maintain scalable full-stack solutions using ReactJS, Python, and PostgreSQL

  • Improve system reliability and observability by implementing best practices in monitoring, logging, and alerting

  • Optimize performance and scalability of our web applications, ensuring seamless user experiences as we rapidly expand

  • Collaborate with infrastructure and backend teams to ensure high availability and resilience of core functions

  • Mentor and guide engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous learning

  • Lead and deliver high-impact projects, balancing speed and quality in a fast-paced, high-ownership environment

  • Conduct in-depth code reviews, uphold best practices, and drive architectural improvements across the stack

  • Work closely with product and design teams to build intuitive, user-friendly experiences for healthcare providers and staff

What You Have
  • 5+ years of professional software development experience, with a focus on building scalable full-stack applications

  • Proficiency in full-stack development with expertise in JavaScript (React/Vue), Python, and PostgreSQL

  • Strong architectural skills with experience designing and maintaining highly scalable, reliable, and performant web applications

  • Experience leading multi-month, high-impact projects, balancing trade-offs, and delivering results in a fast-paced environment

  • Deep understanding of modern front-end engineering—React fundamentals, performance optimization, state management, and component-driven design

  • Experience working with complex backend systems, including designing APIs and optimizing database performance

  • Strong debugging and problem-solving skills, with a focus on observability (monitoring, logging, and alerting best practices)

  • Ability to mentor engineers and drive technical excellence across the organization

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to effectively present technical concepts to leadership and cross-functional teams

Nice to Have
  • Experience scaling front-end applications in a fast-growing, high-traffic environment

  • Deep understanding of frontend performance optimizations and ability to diagnose bottlenecks in React applications

  • Strong product intuition with a track record of influencing UX/UI decisions to improve usability

  • Background in data visualization and building interactive dashboards for analytics-heavy applications

  • Experience with developer tooling and CI/CD pipelines for frontend applications

  • Familiarity with modern API design patterns (GraphQL, REST, gRPC) and best practices in backend-for-frontend (BFF) architectures

  • Contributions to open-source projects or a strong engineering blog presence

  • Experience working in highly regulated industries (finance, insurance, government) with a focus on security and compliance

  • A passion for improving healthcare and healthcare operations in America
