What is an RBT Intern?

RBT Interns are individuals who are in the process of training to become Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs), a credential in the field of applied behavior analysis (ABA). They typically work under the supervision of Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) or other qualified professionals while completing required coursework and practical experience. RBT Interns assist in implementing behavior intervention plans, collecting data, and supporting clients with developmental or behavioral challenges, often focusing on children with autism. The intern role is designed to provide hands-on experience and prepare individuals for the RBT certification exam.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an RBT Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an RBT Intern, you generally need a foundational understanding of applied behavior analysis (ABA), a high school diploma or equivalent, and completion of the RBT training and competency assessment. Familiarity with data collection tools, ABA therapy software, and knowledge of relevant documentation standards are often required. Strong communication, patience, and adaptability are essential soft skills for effectively supporting clients and collaborating with supervisors. These skills and qualities are vital for delivering consistent, ethical care and fostering positive client outcomes in behavioral intervention settings.

What are some common challenges RBT Interns face when working with clients, and how can they address them?

RBT Interns often encounter challenges such as managing difficult behaviors, adapting to individualized treatment plans, and maintaining consistent communication with supervisors and families. To address these, interns should actively seek feedback, participate in ongoing training, and utilize data collection tools effectively. Collaborating closely with Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) and team members also helps in developing practical strategies and building confidence in implementing interventions.

Description:

Intern Case Supervisor I

About Us

At Developmental and Educational Psychological Services (DEPS), we see every child’s potential—not just their diagnosis. Our team is passionate about play-based, family-centered care that empowers kids to learn, grow, and shine. As an Intern Case Supervisor on our multidisciplinary crew (BCBAs, SLPs, OTs), you’ll help shape lives while feeling supported, challenged, and celebrated.

Our mission is to partner with each family, tailoring treatment plans that reflect their values, interests, and goals. At DEPS, we’re not just providing ABA therapy—we’re creating a space where children flourish, families feel supported, and clinicians thrive. Our child-led, naturalistic approach sets us apart and keeps our work deeply rewarding.

Position Overview

The Intern Case Supervisor is a developing clinical leader who has completed or is nearing completion of the educational and certification requirements to become a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and is working toward independent licensure as a Licensed Behavior Analyst (LBA).

Working under the close supervision of a BCBA/LBA, the Intern Case Supervisor supports the development, implementation, and monitoring of individualized treatment plans for clients receiving ABA services. This role provides an opportunity to strengthen clinical leadership skills, gain supervised experience, and prepare for advancement into a BCBA position after obtaining all required certification and licensure.

Clinical Case Support

  • Support the supervising BCBA with client assessments, treatment planning, and clinical documentation.
  • Assist with developing and updating individualized treatment goals and behavior-support strategies.
  • Review client data and help identify progress, barriers, and potential treatment modifications.
  • Observe treatment sessions to evaluate program implementation and client response.
  • Prepare clinical recommendations for review and approval by the supervising BCBA.
  • Help ensure services are delivered consistently with each client’s treatment plan.
  • Complete session notes, progress summaries, reports, and other required documentation accurately and on time.

Team Support and Supervision

  • Provide day-to-day clinical guidance and support to assigned Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs).
  • Model ABA strategies, provide constructive feedback, and support treatment integrity.
  • Assist with RBT training, competency development, and ongoing coaching.
  • Collaborate with the supervising BCBA to address performance or clinical concerns.
  • Support a positive, accountable, and team-oriented clinical environment.
  • Escalate significant clinical, safety, ethical, or performance concerns to the supervising BCBA.

Client and Family Partnership

  • Build supportive and professional relationships with clients and their families.
  • Assist with caregiver training and education under the direction of the supervising BCBA.
  • Communicate client progress, scheduling needs, and treatment-related information within the scope of the role.
  • Collaborate with families and the clinical team to promote consistency across environments.
  • Respond to questions and concerns with professionalism, empathy, and appropriate clinical oversight.

Collaboration and Compliance

  • Participate in clinical meetings, supervision sessions, case reviews, and team trainings.
  • Coordinate with BCBAs, RBTs, caregivers, and other members of the client’s care team.
  • Follow all organizational policies, payer requirements, ethical standards, and applicable regulations.
  • Maintain client confidentiality and comply with HIPAA requirements.
  • Actively participate in professional development and supervised fieldwork activities.
  • Track progress toward BCBA certification and LBA licensure requirements.
Requirements:

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in applied behavior analysis, psychology, education, or a related field completed or nearing completion.
  • Current RBT certification or other applicable credential, if required.
  • Actively pursuing BCBA certification and LBA licensure.
  • Completion of required ABA coursework or enrollment in an approved course sequence.
  • Experience providing ABA services to children or adolescents.
  • Working knowledge of skill-acquisition programs, behavior-reduction strategies, data collection, and clinical documentation.
  • Ability to provide thoughtful coaching and feedback while working under the supervision of a BCBA/LBA.
  • Strong communication, organization, judgment, and relationship-building skills.
  • Commitment to ethical practice, continuous learning, and high-quality client care.
  • Ability to meet applicable background-check, training, and health-clearance requirements.

Role Expectations

This is a supervised developmental position and does not independently perform duties reserved for a BCBA or LBA. Clinical recommendations, treatment-plan changes, formal supervision, and other restricted activities must be reviewed or completed by the supervising BCBA/LBA as required.

Continued employment in this position may require demonstrated progress toward BCBA certification and LBA licensure. Upon obtaining the required certification and license, the employee may be considered for advancement into a BCBA position based on performance, organizational need, and successful completion of all credentialing requirements.
