What is an RTD driver?

An RTD Driver operates buses or other transit vehicles for a Regional Transportation District (RTD), providing safe and reliable public transportation. They follow assigned routes, pick up and drop off passengers, and ensure adherence to schedules. RTD Drivers must have a valid commercial driver's license (CDL) and strong customer service skills. They may also assist passengers with disabilities and handle fare transactions.

What does a typical shift look like for an RTD driver and how is the work schedule structured?

RTD Drivers usually work in shifts that can vary depending on the bus or rail line, with early morning, daytime, evening, and weekend routes to cover public transportation needs. The schedule may include split shifts or rotating days off, so flexibility is important. During a typical shift, you will follow designated routes, pick up and drop off passengers at scheduled stops, assist those with disabilities, and ensure that safety and fare policies are followed. You’ll frequently interact with the public and may coordinate with dispatchers or other drivers to troubleshoot issues that arise on the route. This structure helps ensure reliable transit service for the community and gives RTD Drivers a dynamic, people-focused work environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the RTD driver position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an RTD Driver, you need excellent driving skills, a clean driving record, and a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with passenger and/or air brake endorsements. Familiarity with route navigation systems, fare collection equipment, and safety compliance procedures is typically required. Strong customer service skills, punctuality, and the ability to remain calm under pressure help drivers stand out in this public-facing role. These abilities ensure passenger safety, schedule reliability, and a positive experience for the community using public transit.
