Job description

Summaryย 

QuEra is building its next-generation quantum computer in Boston: the first fault-tolerant, universal quantum computer at a scale where commercially useful applications become possible. This is the scientific,ย technologicalย and commercial frontier - and thisย Senior Quantum Engineerย role sits at the center of it.ย 

You will join the Quantum Computing Servicesย teamย early in this newย machine'sย life,ย learnย QuEra'sย technologyย platformย and theย specificย system from the ground up, and take on increasing ownershipย of theย QPU, driving it towards a product.ย You willย ultimately beย involved inย launching the product,ย andย in theย continued operation of anย internally-facingย andย externally-facingย (commercial)ย quantum computing serviceย with theย systemย at its core.ย 

Yourย mandateย in the first phase of the machine's lifecycleย is systemย integration: workingย onย QuEra'sย machine build task forceย andย interfacing withย internal and externalย engineering teams to corral and integrate the subsystemsย they deliver.ย 

In the second phase of the machine's lifecycle, your mandate isย delivering,ย then sustaining,ย a product and service:ย helping build anย operations team andย ensuringย the successfulย delivery of value to customers. You will be working closely with software teams to build outย and integrate the software stack that enables programmability of the quantum computer,ย with product and commercial teams to defineย the product and service, and with applications and solutions teams to collaborate with go-to-market partners.ย 

Across these phases you will be expected to:ย 

  • Integrate and test new hardware and software features and subsystems, driven by technological developments, customerย needsย and market opportunities.ย 
  • Take growing responsibility for overall operations -ย optimizing forย performance, reliability,ย uptimeย and runningย cost.ย 
  • Build and enable a team of operators so that the machine can serve as the dependable backbone of a commercial service.ย 
  • Support users andย customers, andย translate their needs into the machine's roadmap.ย 

Qualificationsย 

  • A Ph.D. in experimental AMO physics or a related field, with 6+ years of hands-on experience building orย operatingย a neutral-atom or trapped-ion system (as part of theย Ph.D.ย or otherwise).ย 
  • Strong communicationย and collaboration skills, and a real interest in working across multidisciplinary teams - integrating their work into a system and rallying the support it needs.ย 
  • Strong interest in working with customers and end users to understand their needs and translate them intoย features,ย ultimatelyย deliveringย valueย for the market.ย 
  • Software skills, including programming languages and a basic understanding of softwareย architectures.ย 
  • Familiarity with quantum error correction and fault-tolerant architectures is a plus.ย 
  • Familiarity with modern AI workflows for automation is a plus.ย 
  • Success in research, asย evidencedย by peer-reviewed publications and/or scientific talks and other contributions.ย 
  • A willingness to provide on-call support for machine and service operations.ย 
  • Excitement to work at the scientific,ย technologicalย and commercial frontier of quantum computing, and the drive to grow intoย increasingย ownership of a flagship system.
