What Is a Quantity Surveyor?

A quantity surveyor is a cost engineer or a project controls manager for a construction company. Their primary responsibilities are to estimate construction costs and make sure the project stays within budget. As a quantity surveyor, your job duties include providing this estimate based on the measurements provided in the building blueprints and the materials needed, negotiating contracts to best fit your budget, providing advice on sourcing materials, and preparing documents like the Bill of Quantities (BOQ), Tender Document, and Order of Magnitude. Other aspects of your job include insurance valuation, project management, and dispute resolution. You primarily work in an office, but site visits are a necessary part of the career.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Quantity Surveyor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Quantity Surveyor, you need a solid grasp of construction economics, cost estimation, contract administration, and typically a degree in quantity surveying or a related field. Familiarity with cost management software like CostX, MS Excel, and knowledge of standard forms of contract such as JCT or NEC are commonly required, and professional certification from RICS is highly valued. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective negotiation and communication abilities help you excel in client and contractor interactions. These skills ensure accurate cost control, risk management, and the successful financial delivery of construction projects.

What are some of the main challenges Quantity Surveyors face when managing multiple construction projects simultaneously?

Quantity Surveyors often juggle several projects at once, which can make time management and organization particularly challenging. Balancing the demands of different clients, contractors, and project timelines requires excellent communication skills and a proactive approach to problem-solving. Ensuring that cost estimates remain accurate as project scopes change and keeping thorough records are essential to avoid disputes and maintain client trust. Effective use of digital tools and strong teamwork can help streamline these processes and support successful project delivery.

What are Quantity Surveyors?
