What is a quality internship?

A Quality Internship is a temporary position, often held by students or recent graduates, that provides hands-on experience in the quality assurance or quality control department of a company. Interns in this role assist with tasks such as inspecting products, analyzing processes, and helping to maintain or improve quality standards. The purpose of the internship is to expose individuals to quality management systems, compliance procedures, and industry best practices. This experience can help prepare interns for future careers in quality assurance, process improvement, or related fields.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on during a quality internship?

As a Quality Intern, you can expect to participate in a variety of hands-on projects, such as assisting with quality audits, conducting data analysis to identify trends, and helping implement process improvements. You may also support documentation review, collaborate with cross-functional teams like production and engineering, and learn about regulatory compliance standards. These responsibilities provide valuable exposure to quality assurance processes and offer practical experience that can strengthen your future career in the field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a quality intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Quality Intern, you need a solid understanding of quality assurance principles, data analysis, and process improvement, often supported by coursework in engineering, science, or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as Microsoft Excel, statistical analysis software, and quality management systems (QMS) is typically required. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are standout soft skills for this role. These skills ensure accurate quality monitoring, efficient collaboration, and meaningful contributions to continuous improvement initiatives.

Job description

Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. Since 2009, our team has worked steadily to make this dream a reality. We’ve designed and tested many generations of prototype aircraft capable of serving in a network of electric air taxis. We’re looking for talented, committed individuals to join our team as we push onward toward certifying the Joby aircraft, scaling our manufacturing, and launching our initial commercial service.

Joby Aviation is seeking a highly organized, analytical, and passionate intern to join our Quality Engineering team. In this role, you will gain hands-on exposure to core facets of aerospace quality engineering, risk management, and production validation. You will work closely with a designated mentor to support advanced manufacturing processes, data collection, and continuous improvement initiatives critical to paving the way for commercial production.

Locations: Opportunities are available at either our Marina or San Carlos facilities

This Quality Internship role will learn from and support their mentor in a variety of potential manufacturing processes/products depending on their background and knowledge. Potential areas include:

  • Composites Manufacturing (Marina, CA)
  • Aircraft Assembly (Marina, CA)
  • Quality Management Systems (Marina, CA)
  • Mechanical Systems (San Carlos, CA)
  • Dimensional Management (San Carlos or Marina, CA)

  • Develop, coordinate, and execute process capability studies and measurement systems analysis (MSA); interpret statistical data to provide technical recommendations
  • Assist in analyzing product or process failures, supporting structural root-cause investigations (8D, 5-Why) to prevent reoccurrence
  • Perform preliminary design and documentation reviews to evaluate inspectability, accuracy, and conformance to internal and regulatory standards
  • Support engineering teams with Lean Manufacturing initiatives (such as 5S, Kaizen, and mistake-proofing techniques) to eliminate waste and reduce the cost of poor quality

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science (B.S.), Master of Science (M.S.), or Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering, Quality Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a closely related technical discipline with a formal focus on Quality Systems, Operations Research, or Reliability Engineering
  • Enrollment in the final 2 years of an undergraduate program (Junior/Senior standing) or currently enrolled in a relevant graduate program. Recent graduates within the last 12 months will also be considered
  • Strong foundational understanding of statistical data analysis, engineering statistics, or statistical process control (SPC)
  • Demonstrated experience utilizing computer-aided design software (e.g., CATIA, SolidWorks, or NX) for reviewing mechanical drawings or models
  • A basic conceptual understanding of manufacturing methodologies, materials processing, or assembly workflows
  • Excellent problem-solving capabilities, rigid attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and professional written/verbal communication skills
  • A growth-oriented mindset with a strong willingness to learn, adapt, and take ownership of tasks in a fast-evolving engineering environment

  • Familiarity with ASME Y14.5 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles.
  • Coursework or basic exposure to Lean Six Sigma methodologies, Design of Experiments (DOE), or quality management standards (such as ISO 9001 or AS9100).
  • Previous hands-on project experience within a student-led engineering organization (e.g., Formula SAE, AIAA Design/Build/Fly, or similar competitive engineering clubs) focusing on manufacturing operations or quality tracking.

Relocation Assistance: This position does not offer relocation assistance. Candidates must live in the immediate area or relocate at their own expense.

The pay range for undergraduate interns, which includes junior to senior level students, is $22.00 - $31.00 per hour. The pay range for graduate interns with a Bachelor's, Master's, and/or Ph.D. degree in progress or completed is $5,500 - $7,800 per month.
