What is a QA tester?

QA Testers, or Quality Assurance Testers, are professionals responsible for evaluating software applications to ensure they meet specified requirements and function properly. They identify bugs, report issues, and verify that new features work as intended before software is released to users. QA Testers use manual and automated testing methods to check software performance, usability, and security. Their work is essential for delivering high-quality, reliable, and user-friendly software products.

What are some common challenges QA testers face when working on fast-paced development teams?

QA Testers often encounter challenges such as tight deadlines, rapidly changing requirements, and the need to quickly learn new tools or technologies. In fast-paced environments, balancing thorough test coverage with the speed of development can be difficult, and clear communication with developers and product managers is essential to address issues promptly. Adapting to evolving project priorities while maintaining quality standards is a key skill for success in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a QA tester, and why are they important?

To thrive as a QA Tester, you need a solid understanding of software development processes, attention to detail, and familiarity with test case design and execution, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Experience with automated testing tools (such as Selenium or JUnit), bug tracking systems (like Jira), and knowledge of scripting languages are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and problem-solving skills help QA Testers collaborate across teams and identify root causes of issues. These skills ensure software quality, reduce defects, and improve user satisfaction by enabling thorough and efficient testing processes.

What is the difference between Qa Tester vs QA Analyst?

AspectQa TesterQA Analyst
CertificationsISTQB, CSTEISTQB, CSTE, Six Sigma
Work EnvironmentSoftware development teams, testing labsQuality assurance departments, project teams
Primary FocusExecuting test cases, finding bugsAnalyzing quality processes, improving testing strategies
Common UsageManual and automated testing rolesTest planning, quality process management

While both Qa Testers and QA Analysts work to ensure software quality, Qa Testers primarily focus on executing test cases and identifying bugs, whereas QA Analysts analyze quality processes and improve testing strategies. Qa Testers are more involved in hands-on testing, while QA Analysts often handle planning and process improvement.

Is QA tester a good entry level job?

A QA tester is often considered a suitable entry-level role in software development, as it typically requires basic understanding of testing processes, attention to detail, and familiarity with testing tools. Many companies offer training and onboarding for new testers, making it accessible for those starting their careers in tech. However, developing skills in scripting, bug tracking, and understanding software development cycles can enhance job prospects and growth opportunities.

Is it hard to be a QA tester?

Being a QA tester involves attention to detail, understanding testing tools, and knowledge of software development processes. The difficulty varies based on experience, complexity of projects, and the testing environment, but it generally requires problem-solving skills and continuous learning.

What do you do as a QA tester?

A QA tester is responsible for evaluating software to identify bugs and ensure it meets quality standards. They create and execute test cases, document issues, and work with developers to resolve problems. Proficiency with testing tools and understanding of software development processes are essential for this role.

Job description

BIS Safety Software is a SaaS company on a mission to change how organizations manage safety, learning, and compliance - and the team behind that mission matters just as much as the product. We are expanding our team and are looking to add a thoughtful, detail-oriented Software Tester who is passionate about software quality and enjoys blending both manual and automated testing.

About the role:

This role is a key part of our evolution from primarily manual testing toward a more automation-focused QA process. You'll play a hands-on role in ensuring the quality of our releases-owning manual testing for new features while actively contributing to our growing automation framework.

You'll work closely with developers and the QA team to understand product workflows, uncover edge cases, and help us continuously improve how we test. This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys digging into the details but is also excited to build toward a more scalable, automated future.

This is an onsite role based out of our Sherwood Park, Alberta office.

In this role, you'll be expected to:
  • Execute manual test cases for new features, releases, and regression cycles
  • Help drive the transition to automation by converting manual test cases into automated script
  • Create and maintain clear, structured test plans and test scenarios
  • Identify, document, and track defects with strong attention to detail
  • Collaborate closely with developers to reproduce, troubleshoot, and resolve issues
  • Write and maintain automated tests and update existing scripts as needed
  • Participate in improving QA processes, testing coverage, and documentation
  • Prepare and manage test data to support testing activities
  • Leverage tools and emerging technologies (including AI) to enhance QA workflows
You might be the right fit if you:
  • Are highly detail-oriented and naturally curious when exploring systems
  • Enjoy both manual testing and building toward automation
  • Think critically and can identify edge cases others might miss
  • Are proactive in clarifying requirements and understanding product workflows
  • Communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical team members
  • Take ownership of your work and follow through to completion
  • Thrive in a collaborative, fast-changing environment
  • Are tech-savvy and enjoy learning new tools and frameworks
  • Approach problems thoughtfully and methodically
Qualifications:
  • 3+ years of experience in software testing
  • Strong foundation in manual testing (test case design, regression, exploratory testing)
  • Hands-on experience with test automation (Playwright preferred; Cypress/Selenium acceptable)
  • Experience with JavaScript or TypeScript for automation scripting
  • Familiarity with test case management tools (e.g., TestRail)
  • Experience with bug tracking systems (e.g., Jira, Redmine)
  • Comfortable using browser debugging tools and version control (Git)
  • Exposure to API testing and CI/CD testing workflows
  • Strong documentation and defect reporting skills
Bonus points if you have:
  • Experience working in a SaaS or software product environment
  • Experience helping teams transition from manual to automated testing
  • Exposure to modern QA practices like shift-left testing
  • Computer Science or related education (or equivalent experience)
Compensation and Benefits:
  • Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP)
  • Full medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • Life insurance and disability insurance
  • Health spending account
  • Flexible working hours
  • On-the-job training and growth opportunities
  • Free on-site parking
$65,000 - $80,000 a year

Salary ranges are based on experience, reflecting the unique skillset each individual brings to the role.
