Job description

At AKS, we are growing and building for the future. We bring together multidisciplined experts across the land development, energy, and infrastructure markets to take on bigger challenges and deliver solutions that make a real difference. Our teams combine creativity, technical excellence, and a collaborative, hands-on approach to solve complex problems and deliver results our clients and communities can count on. We take pride in our work and our ability to provide opportunities for our teams, support each other's growth, and look ahead to what's next. When you join AKS, you will find opportunities to take ownership of meaningful projects, learn, lead, and make an impact from day one.
Role summary The Survey Technology Specialist drives survey technology evaluation, implementation, and adoption across the firm. This technically focused, hands-on role evaluates new hardware and software, completes and supports in-progress survey projects, documents procedures, and develops training so survey teams can reliably use new tools and workflows. This is a fulltime, Tualatin-office role with regular field work and cross-office rollout responsibilities. Compensation will be determined case-by-case based on experience.
What You'll Do
  • Evaluate new survey hardware and software (GNSS/RTK, total stations, LiDAR, UAV/drone systems, point-cloud tools, field and office software) and lead pilot projects to validate capabilities and workflows.
  • Implement new technology firmwide: develop rollout plans, coordinate equipment procurement, and partner with leads in other offices to ensure smooth adoption.
  • Complete and take ownership of mid-project survey tasks when supervisors need assistance-troubleshoot, finish field runs, and produce deliverables to get projects to closeout.
  • Create and maintain SOPs, step-by-step procedures, and "how-to" documentation that memorialize existing knowledge and standardize best practices.
  • Develop training materials and deliver hands-on training sessions for survey crews and office staff; act as a clear, patient teacher and mentor.
  • Maintain and organize technical resources: equipment inventory, maintenance schedules, firmware updates, and vendor relationships.
  • Coordinate with Project Managers, survey supervisors, CAD/GIS teams, and vendors to ensure technical requirements are met and workflows integrate across disciplines.
  • Track outcomes from R&D pilots, recommend process improvements, and support adoption metrics and reporting.
Who You Are
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Surveying, Geomatics, GIS, Civil Engineering, or related field - or equivalent hands on surveying/technical experience.
  • Typically 3-7+ years of experience with survey equipment and field workflows; exact requirements are flexible and will be evaluated case by case based on demonstrated technical skill.
  • Deep working knowledge of survey hardware and field software (GNSS/RTK, total stations, UAVs, LiDAR/point-cloud tools, Trimble/Leica/Topcon or similar).
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot equipment in the field and complete projects to deliverable quality.
  • Experience developing SOPs and training materials, and delivering effective hands-on training.
  • Highly organized, detail oriented, and able to manage multiple pilot projects and rollout tasks.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; comfortable coordinating with technical teams and presenting to nontechnical staff.
  • Self starter who seeks out new technology, tests it rigorously, and champions practical adoption.
Nice to Have
  • PLS license or working toward licensure (licensure not required for the role but valued).
  • Experience with point-cloud processing, LiDAR workflows, or UAV photogrammetry.
  • Familiarity with scripting or automation (Python) for survey/GIS tasks.
  • Prior experience leading R&D or pilot programs and tracking adoption metrics.
