What is a purser?

A purser is an officer on a ship or aircraft responsible for handling financial matters, passenger welfare, and administrative tasks. On cruise ships and large vessels, the purser manages accounts, oversees the disbursement of money, and ensures passenger needs are met, including handling their documentation and resolving any issues that arise during the voyage. In the airline industry, a purser is the lead flight attendant, supervising the cabin crew and ensuring passenger safety and comfort. Pursers play a vital organizational and customer service role, making sure operations run smoothly during travel.

What are some common challenges a purser faces when managing onboard operations?

Pursers often encounter challenges in balancing administrative duties with customer service, especially during busy travel periods. They are responsible for handling passenger concerns, coordinating with crew members, and ensuring all documentation is accurate and compliant with regulations. Effective communication and problem-solving skills are crucial, as unexpected issues such as itinerary changes or guest complaints frequently arise. Working collaboratively with other departments, like catering and security, is also essential to maintain smooth operations throughout the journey.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a purser, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Purser, you need strong organizational skills, financial acumen, and experience in administrative or customer service roles, often supported by relevant certifications or maritime qualifications. Familiarity with inventory management systems, accounting software, and maritime regulations is typically required. Excellent interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage stressful situations help Pursers deliver superior service to crew and passengers. These skills ensure smooth onboard operations, accurate financial management, and a positive guest experience on ships.

How do you become a pursuer?

To become a pursuer, typically one needs to meet the minimum age requirement, pass a background check, and complete relevant training or certification, such as safety and customer service courses. Experience in hospitality, customer interaction, or related fields can also be beneficial, along with strong communication and problem-solving skills.

How much does a Purser get paid?

A Purser's salary typically ranges from $40,000 to $80,000 annually, depending on experience, airline, and location. Senior pursers or those working for international airlines may earn higher wages and additional benefits such as travel perks and bonuses.

Job description

Job Title: Slimetender

Reporting to: Manager on Duty

Job Type: Hourly Non-Exempt; Availability to work nights and/or weekends, a must

About Sloomoo Inc.

Sloomoo Inc. is an interactive experience, based on slime and all things #satisfying. Founded in late 2019 by two best friends who found slime healing during difficult times, the mission of the company is to deliver joy. Playing with slime taps into four of the five senses: it's visually mesmerizing; it smells delicious (Sloomoo slimes are hand-made and scented); it offers soothing ASMR sounds; and it feels both relaxing and playful.

The environment is made for digging in with your hands and getting off of your screens, whether you're a kid or a kid-at-heart. A finalist of Fast Company's Innovation by Design Award, the design of Sloomoo is glossy, contemporary, and accessible.

There are five locations - New York, Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, and Los Angeles - with more on the way. Mission driven, the brand supports mental fitness through a partnership with the Goldie Hawn Foundation's MindUP and is committed to neurodiverse inclusivity (the aim is for 10% of the workforce to be neurodiverse, including people who bring job coaches to work).

Position Summary

As a Slimetender at Sloomoo, you’re the face of the Sloomooverse - you’re the ones guests interact with. You’re an ambassador of the brand and a representation of the mission. You are influential in their experience and your role is to deliver a joyful, fun, and safe experience to our guests. While the slime is the star, you’re the one who makes the memories by showcasing slime tricks, engaging, bringing the energy, and meeting the guests where they are (some may be neurodiverse and looking for a calm moment, others may be over the top excited and ready to play).

This role involves greeting guests, truly interacting with all of the slime activities, managing guest flow, and ensuring the environment is clean and welcoming.

Responsibilities:

  • Warmly welcome guests, offering an overview of activities, safety guidelines, and events, ensuring a seamless entry to an unforgettable experience.

  • Efficiently process admissions and manage reservations, maintaining a keen eye on room capacity and guest flow to ensure everyone has a great time.

  • Take charge of attractions, from slime-making workshops to interactive games and photo ops, bringing energy, enthusiasm, and a personal touch to each interaction. Explain what they’re doing, based on the area you are overseeing - guide them to their stop along the Sloomoo journey.

  • Oversee the operation of each experience according to our high standards, ensuring policies and procedures are followed to provide a safe, efficient, and fun environment.

  • Scan and redeem tickets, ensuring a smooth transition for guests through various experiences while keeping an accurate count for room capacity.

  • Adhere to scripts and spiels for each station (they are all created to deliver joy and immerse guests in the Sloomoo world) to provide a consistent and high-quality guest experience, ensuring all interactions align with our brand standards.

  • Conduct occasional maintenance and cleaning of props and attractions, ensuring they meet design specifications and reporting any issues to management promptly.

  • Maintain cleanliness at all stations by picking up slime off the floor, cleaning the vats, and ensuring the glass on Slingshot and other areas is cleaned throughout shifts, contributing to a safe and inviting environment.

  • Uphold the Sloomoo brand integrity both within the experience space and in all external interactions, always serving as a brand ambassador.

  • Ensure safety is always prioritized, addressing, and logging any damages or repair needs, and conveying guest feedback and concerns to management.

  • Support your team members, contributing to a collaborative, positive working environment where everyone can thrive.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent; further education in hospitality, tourism, or a related field is a plus.

  • Previous experience in customer service or hospitality, with a flair for creating memorable guest experiences.

  • Exceptional communication skills, a friendly demeanor, and the ability to engage with a diverse range of guests.

  • A proactive problem-solver with a positive attitude, able to handle situations with professionalism.

  • Flexible availability, including weekends, evenings, and holidays, ready to bring joy to our guests whenever needed.

  • A team player who is also capable of working independently, with a genuine passion for fun, creativity, and the Sloomoo brand.

Inclusivity Commitment:Sloomoo Inc. is a company that respects and welcomes the uniqueness of each employee and offers everyone the means to find their place and thrive. We are committed to equal employment opportunities, career development opportunities and promoting initiatives aimed at creating a culture that is meaningful, innovative and successful.
