Job Description

Overview and Impact: Volunteer Job Search Assistants at the Appleton Public Library (APL) provide help to people searching for jobs for a variety of career and employment-related needs. APL offers free access to study rooms, computers with internet, and wi-fi, so volunteers can provide individual assistance to people seeking assistance. Volunteers are available at the library to assist job seekers with job searches, online applications, building a resume and cover letter, learning new skills (upskilling) using our FREE digital resources such as Gale Courses and Mango Languages, and exploring career changes.

Examples of Duties

Responsibilities and Expectations:

  • Providing employment assistance, training, and resources to people looking for work
  • Teaching patrons to set up accounts and use online resources for employment, training, and education:
    • Job search sites (i.e., Job Center, Indeed, etc.)
    • APL upskilling resources (i.e., Gale Courses, Mango Languages)
    • Community resources (i.e., 2-1-1, community bulletin board, jobs/career/business bulletin board)
  • Finding rรฉsumรฉ templates and/or assisting with creating rรฉsumรฉs
  • Listening attentively and asking open-ended questions to help patrons identify and articulate job skills
  • Printing, scanning, and copying on public APL devices
  • Providing library directions (i.e., bathrooms) and hours

  • Passionate about helping others in our community
  • Respectful and non-judgmental of individuals from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and abilities
  • Able to provide friendly, patient, and non-judgmental instruction and assistance
  • Proficient with a variety of computer skills:
    • Navigating websites and search engines
    • Microsoft Office suite
    • Various Internet browsers (Chrome, FireFox, Edge, etc)
    • Computers, tablets, and smartphones
  • Able to work a weekly 2 hour shift
  • Bilingual helpful but not required
  • Training will be provided
