Job description

Bar Manager
The Eugene O'Neill Theater Center is in search of a Seasonal Bar Manager for Blue Gene's Pub's 2026 Summer Season. This position works directly with the Operations Manager to ensure the Pub's success.
This is an exempt position that is expected to work 40 hours per week, including weekends. The salary for this position is a weekly stipend of $685, plus tips.
Along with working with the Operations Manager, the Bar Manager must coordinate with O'Neill staff for all events including regularly scheduled shows, development events, rentals, and more. Candidates should have a firm grasp of bar management with the ability to develop and achieve goals, promote teamwork among bartenders, and create a welcoming and safe environment for patrons.

The Eugene O'Neill Theater Center is the country's preeminent organization dedicated to the development of new works and new voices for the stage. From its campus in Waterford, Connecticut, the O'Neill has been home to more than 1,000 new works for the stage and thousands more emerging artists. Blue Gene's Pub sits in the center of the campus and acts as the space of gathering for playwrights, artists, staff, and community members.

Among other responsibilities, the Seasonal Bar Manager will:
  • Establish a welcoming atmosphere for Pub guests, demonstrating and maintaining a high standard of hospitality both in the building and behind the bar.
  • Train and manage bartenders for the 2026 Summer Season, and serve as a regular bartender as needed.
  • Complete regular and accurate beverage inventory, including ordering, receiving all deliveries, and restocking as necessary.
  • Stay up-to-date and enforce all health and safety rules while ensuring the Pub is clean and well presented at all times.
  • Be the main point of contact for all Pub matters including: welcoming guests, managing customer service issues, and coordinating Pub events with O'Neill staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Experience
Qualified candidates will have at least 1-year of professional experience in bar management or 5-years in professional bartending. They will also be comfortable handling cash, experience working with a POS system, stand for long periods of time, and be able to lift at least 50 lbs. Bar Manager must be TIPS certified in the state of CT - if not, training will be provided. Must have the ability to work independently.
Preferred candidates will have a valid Driver's License and reliable transportation to and from the O'Neill's campus.
