What is a psychology internship?

Psychology internships are supervised practical training experiences that allow students or recent graduates to apply their academic knowledge in real-world settings, such as hospitals, clinics, schools, or research institutions. These internships are often required as part of graduate or doctoral psychology programs and provide hands-on experience in assessment, therapy, research, or community outreach. Interns work under the guidance of licensed psychologists and gain valuable skills, professional contacts, and insight into various psychology specialties. Completing an internship is often a crucial step toward licensure and a professional career in psychology.

What types of tasks and responsibilities can I expect during a psychology internship?

As a psychology intern, your daily responsibilities may include assisting with psychological assessments, observing therapy sessions, conducting literature reviews, and supporting data collection for research projects. You might also help facilitate group activities, prepare reports, and participate in team meetings. The exact tasks will vary depending on the internship setting (such as clinical, counseling, or research environments), but you can expect a hands-on learning experience that emphasizes both professional development and ethical practice.
